I've had some fluid on the pan since I got the car...not a ton, but some.

Recently converted the solid steel lines to flex.

Drained the converter, dropped the pan, cleaned the screen and new gasket.

Refilled with 6 US Qts. Went through the start up procedure ending in neutral.

Drove it 3 or 4 miles and parked it.

I know I am 1/2 Qt shy of full per the FSM.

Yesterday noticed a good amount of fluid leaked out over a week or so.

Appears to be coming out of the bell housing.

All new lines are clean and dry.

Skimmed through the FSM..trannys and TQ's are not in my repetoire.

Ideas?

Any procedures a novice might have success at?

There are two common leak points in the bellhousing area;

1) the seal between the torque convertor & the front pump is old/ worn & leaks (aka "front pump seal")

2)The bushing that supports the neck of the torque convertor in the pump is worn. This allows fluid to drain out of the convertor when the car sits & it overflows out the trans vent (I think that is located on the pump as well) . A worn bushing doesn't help seal life either, which can cause it to leak.

Either repair requires you to remove the trans from the car, & you have pull the pump off to do the bushing.

Check for a loose drain plug in the torque coverter too.

Kick-down lever seal is a common leak point on 60-65 904s
(A common leak point on all Torqueflite trannsmissions, for that matter)
And don't over-look the dip stick tube o-ring, those can leak.

Another member informed about the kickdown o-ring.
I believe it, as there was fluid up on top.
I cleaned as best I could when I was under there.

I'm kind of wondering whether or not it was fluid that got into the bell housing when I drained the TQ.
Seems that you would have to jack the back of the car up when draining to avoid it.
I wiped it out as best I could but kind of tough getting anything (rag) under the teeth on the ring gear.

The TQ drain plug showed no signs of leak when I removed it, and I torqued it to specs when I put it back in.
I've got the front end jacked up at the moment...we'll see when I put it back down.

Itll only leak from the sector lever and dipstick O-ring when it sits. Under power, the fluid level is under these points. The "no yo-yo" kit from Trans-go stops the fluid drainback from the convertor that might help, but seals are the correct fix.
