I was given a 225 that I want to rebuild for my truck. It sat in a salvage yard so long that no one knew what it came out of. It has to be at least from the mid 70's for it has "peanut plugs" and an electronic ignition distributor. Hoping these #'s can tell me the year and what it might have been out of. Block #'s are 0225 R 1024 E. These #'s are off the top/rear of the head on the manifold side; 2909 and right underneath are these #'s; 4104 3602. Hope these help. Thanks.

I cant really tell you the year, but i know for sure its a Cast Crank block by the "225R" code, if its got solid lifters it could be from late76 to 80 and if its got hydraulic lifters then its from 81-87

This wouldnt be the best motor to build if your going for performance, but would be a good stock engine

A cast crank engine should be 225E, and a nice forged crank unit will be a 225R, if everything is original to the engine including the peanut plug head that will put it circa 1975-1976....i think there's a pad toward the back of the block under the cylinder head on the passenger side that has the last few digits of the VIN, usually the first number is the year it was built (6=1976,5=1975, etc...)

I would guess it is a 1978 with a cast crank. My reasoning is this
In the early engine numbers a letter preceded the 17 (170) or 22(225)
indicating what year the block was. R was the letter for 1978 -

The E after all the rest of the digits indicated a cast crank engine -
documented in the Mopar performance bulletins.

To see if my guess is correct - the engine section of the 1978 parts
books may decode the format of the engine number (my 1961 parts
book does for the 61 models)

225=Cubic inch displacement
R= engine usage code:
R=Passenger car engine

1024=shift it was built on

E=parts ID code:

A=oversize cylinder bore
E= Cast Crank shaft
X=o/s valves

These numbers aren't entirely conclusive either in some cases, my 1974 block just says 3W 225 4 06 on the pad

(1973, 225, 406 shift code...)


Can't wait til you open it up and ring the crank with a wrench to see if it rings or has a dull sound to it....
Otherwise, a 1980 cast crank passenger car mill...
