 Post subject: new rebuilt start up

Hello, was looking in the search tab but didn't have the patience to look through the complete archive, starting my rebuilt BUT it has been sitting for a while after the rebuild, NEVER BEEN FIRED. somebody told me to pull the distributor and use the drill technique, but I know that that works on other motors but the way the cam and distributor mesh isn't the same and I don't have a spare gear for the drill to make this work.
Another way I was thinking was pull the plugs, drain some oil from the pan, and after the valve cover is removed pour the oil over the top, and after that turn the motor over until there is pressure in the top end. Replace the spark plugs and fire it up.
There has been too much work to second guess this, so here I am.
Thanxs ahead of time for you suggestions.

Is it in the car or out? Did you use assembly lube when you put it together? I would take off the oil pan, turn it upside down and pore oil on the pistons to lube up the cylinders. Put the pan back on (new gaskets) put it in the car, add oil, spin up the oil pump, put the dist back in and start her up.

Oops-you can't spin the pump so ignore that part. You can put the pump and pack petroleum jelly to prime it.

Its in the car. Assembly lube YES. Did pack the oil pump. will just pour oil over the top and turn it over by hand then by ignition with the plugs out first.

As long as the plugs are out squirt some oil on top of the pistons to lube the walls.

Done this in the past with great success on old junkyard motors: Yank the plugs, put in fresh oil and squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil into each cylinder. Rotate the engine over several times by hand with a breaker bar, or bump the starter a few times. It really doesn't take much to pump oil through the engine. Now install the plugs and fire it up, soon as you can after you turned the motor over a few times. it might smoke a bit at first, but as long as nothing is banging around it should be fine. If it's a new build and you but plenty of assembly lube on the cam, should not be a problem. Keep the RPM steady around 2000 for 20 minutes to break in the cam, then let it idle. Worked for me.

Marvel Mystery Oil maybe to thin for a fresh engine to cling to the walls. Marvel Mystery Oil would be good for older grimed up rings to free them up. I would still use fresh engine oil for the cylinders. Turning by hand is ok or the starter.

pulled the plugs put some oil in the cylinders and bumped the motor, pressure came up and oil started on top, just then the carb started gushing fuel. Darn it, tearing it apart to see whats up. coming out of the top end.

Easy-carb float is stuck down. Let it sit for a while or add some spray can carb cleaner, to pop it loose.

Sounds like a stuck needle or dirt/foreign matter between the needle and seat. Since some of that fuel probably made it down the cylinders I would pull the plugs. Dry the cylinders with compressed air and re-oil the cylinders.
