I replaced the Champions with NGK ZFR5N plugs last night. I have never in my life put in any plugs that weren't "spec" plugs so I was a little wary only because I haven't done it before... but because of this forum I swallowed my anxiety and installed them.

I haven't replaced the distributor cap or rotor yet, but I plan to as soon as I get them ordered. The '67 Dart took a little longer to crank than usual, but I also rebuilt the carburetor yesterday, too, so I'm in the process of getting it set right.

The car seemed to run well, and we're doing well with it. Hopefully we'll be able to get the entire brake system replaced this week, so slow and steady we'll get it knocked out.

Thanks so much to you guys and all of your help! Now to get a new exhaust manifold...

Yes, but man, Dan... what a PAIN! I was afraid on the first one the ring was going to get stuck or I'd drop the plug or something... but with pliers and holding the plug in a plug ratchet, I got them all done.

It was so weird taking out the much bigger Champions and putting in the NGKs, but I did it on your recommendation. Glad I've found this forum because I am learning so much!

Just ordered a BlueStreak distributor cap. Now I'm looking for an M0-3000 rotor.

Dan, I am also about to address a plug change, and after consulting my notes from 2008 on the subject, I found a listing for NGK UR5. Above in this thread, Mrstangblb used NGK ZFR5N. Are these the same plug?

Oddly when I first purchased my Dart, it had NGK split tip plugs installed which were badly fouled due to the car’s poor running condition at the time. I did not make note their number.

UR-5 is for the 1975+ Tapered Seat BL plug head...the ZFR5N is only useable in the drool tube head.

OK, I'll bite. What's the reason and why behind this?

The metal gaskets are not needed on plugs because the tubes act as a gasket. If rings are left on, the plug will run too hot due to not enough contact with plug seat for proper cooling. It also places the plug tip in wrong position in combustion chamber.
Only one year I think, they were supposed to be left on 1960,1961? Very early.

OK, thanks for the clarification D.I. I have a peanut head, it’s the skinny UR5 plugs for me than.

This is something that I run into when rereading my notes form board discussions, or other resources that pertain to my particular engine or car, not recording the full story. All I listed by hand was: Plugs; use NGK #UR5.

This plug thing is a good example of my shoddy shorthand. Would it have killed me to make a note that UR5 is narrow plug for the later non drool tube heads?

Self, expand on reason for a particular part recommendation, and perhaps foot note it or reference where recommendation came from…

I have discovered in the last three years of Dart ownership that where a general recommendation was sufficient during the first few months of the project, now much greater detail is needed as to method, or part, or theory how a particular repair is to be conducted for optimal results.

I think that 1975-1987 for 225 vehicles lists only the UR-5...if you have deposit color problems I think you can step up to a UR-4...but I don't think you can get a UR-6...

is it a good idea to do with autolite 65's as well? to pull the washers off of them?

It applies to any plug used in the drool tube head.
I remember something about 1960 being different, but not sure where that came from.
I use an old set of side cutters to remove the plug crush washers. Cut one side, cut the other, no pain.

No, the best idea with Autolite's Chinese junk is to throw them in the trash or not buy them in the first place, and get NGKs instead.

Answer is yes, you remove the ring washer from any spark plug of any brand you install in any '63-'74 slant-6 head. You leave the ring washer on any spark plug of any brand you install in any '60-'62 slant-6 head. Follow the links…follow the links…follow the links.
