just took off intake exhaust manifold. had the usual broken bolt
connecting the two halves together. upon removing the the other two bolts.
they also broke. even though i heated the exhaust casting red hot and let
cool several times. sprayed them with kroil and tryed again.
well one stub actually came out. the other two i carefully drilled out.
and was able to run a 5/16 nc tap and clean them out.
thats the good news . upon further exam of the exhuast manifold
the spring loaded butterfly valve is frozen in the wide open hot position.
i guess thats ok but have noticed the car has a low surging idle at best until car is warmed up completely.in the colder months it will not idle at all. until completely warmed up.
once completely warm idle is decent.
would like to repair this valve. i can heat up casting and unfreeze it
but with out the new spring and counter weight i will leave alone
any suggestions. need the round counter weight and heat spring.
seems like there is a spring missing on the counter weight side also.
so maybe two springs? any leads on a repair kit or related parts would
be most appreciated thanx in advance

I was looking at a similar problem, when we got the Valiant it had extractors on it, and I did not realise it should have a hot box, Have had all sorts of trouble getting it to idle when cold, was wondering what solution there is, RAY

The manifold heat control valve repair kits are no longer manufactured; you'd have to go hunting for a new old stock item. The kit included everything -- shaft, counterweight, valve plate, springs, bushings, etc. Kits are interchangeable by counterweight shape (round '70-up vs. rectangular '69-down).
