First off I don't know much about cars and I own a 74 Plymouth Duster 225 slant.

I was wondering what kind of carb I had. I looked at it and could only find the name Elkton and some numbers. I was also wondering if I should just opt for a better one or just rebuild it. I've been having starting problems and the car has randomly shut off pulling up to my drive way or at a stop light, I read some post's on this site and I think the float needs to be replaced but then again I don't know what I'm talking about lol. This weekend I'm going to do the fuel line mod to see if that helps. Sorry for so many newbie questions figured it would be easier to just ask all at once. Oh and I have a "push button" ignition and a manual choke, thought you needed to know by chance. Thanks again.

Welcome on the board. That's a Holley model 1945, type 7357. Looks like a "remanufactured" unit. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. You'll want to put in a brass float to replace the soakage-prone foam original. Brass float is Walker #100-48. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. You'll want to do a valve adjustment if it's been awhile (or if you don't know when the last one was), and you'll also want to bypass the OSAC valve: find the hose that goes to the distributor vacuum advance and connect it directly to the spark advance (or "OSAC") port on the carburetor without stopping at the widget on the side of the air cleaner housing.

Try to get a good-quality carburetor kit; I like the "DFV" upgraded inlet needle and seat design in the kits from www.daytonaparts.com .

Ok so i did everything except carb rebuild and everything seems to be running better but now I have blackish water being sprayed out of my exhaust and I don't know why.

If this is only on startup, then you are fine. Typically, water condenses in the exhaust line and muffler as the exhaust system cools. When the motor is first started up and the exhaust system begins to heat up, the water in the exhaust line (a) is pushed out of the pipe by the exhaust gasses and (b) vaporizes due to the heat and turns to steam. The white smoke is the steam and the dripping water is the water being pushed out. The blackness in the water is likely carbon buildup on the inside of the exhaust line being washed out by the water coming through the system.

A well tuned and clean running motor also has water as a natural byproduct of the combustion process. A motor that is freshly tuned up properly after having been neglected for a long time will often dribble black water out the tailpipe until the carbon buildup has been removed from the exhaust line or new exhaust piping is installed.

haha I feel dumb, thank you I was freaking out a little when I saw that black stuff. Also a new development; after I did new plugs/wires, distributer cap/rotor, pcv valve, fuel line mod, and a new fuel pump i took it on a little drive around the block and it ran great for about five minutes then we stopped and my brother wanted to drive and while walking around the car it started to die so my bro ran in real quick to give it gas and we were able to get it home and at home it seemed to be sputtering pretty bad out of the tailpipe I don't know if thats bad but it was different. Anyone know why it did that? thanks
