Have an 84 D100 short with stock 3 speed auto. Very low miles and I need to install a new trans or overdrive bolt-on that I can enjoy long term.

This must be an age old question but what are my options guys?
I have seen bolt-ons but for $3000 that seems a bit much for my budget right now!!!!!

I hate to tell you but unless you find a OD unit like a gear venders in the bone yard,highly unlikly,the cost to convert is going to be high.Even if you get a stock OD auto out of say 1 95 truck-its basicaly a 904 with a od unit and computer controled solenoid-first its the issue of electronics then every one of thoose trans needs a second gear band in it by 100,00 mile.You might be able to find a old 904,or even luckier the hd version which is internally beefed-the 999 -with a lock up convertor that locks after 40 mph off of internal pressure switch, but once its locked there is no slip and it drops the rpm by 10-20%.Then all you need is the high stall convertor.But all of this cost money.

Probably the easiest would be the stock 4spd manual "OD" trans which had wide ratio gears. A whole setup like that can be had for your truck for as low as about $300 used if you look around, or maybe $1000 for something with a bunch of new/rebuilt parts (clutch, trans...).

The A500 or 42RE is the 904-based truck OD trans, but it only has the bolt pattern for SB V8. You need an adapter plate (rare, 67-down 727 Slant 6 app) to run that. You could also get the 727-based A518 or 46RE. 93-up are computer controlled, but 92-down can engage OD with simple switches.

I have one in my truck-I wound up rebuilding it-it was easier and cheaper then an yother way and when I check they are getting a premium for that trans .Most of the 150 rams with the 6 ran a 10 inch flywheel,122 tooth( thats what is in mine and cheap flywheels are getting scare) if I remember-and that flywheel and belhousing is dedicated for that size.I kick myself,6 months ago E bay had a listing from Rawhide Boys ranch-1983 slant 6 manual a 833 with a cap on the box for $500-frame and underside was rotted out but the rest was good-that would be the best way for you to go if you could find a doner.And the floor has to be cut out and a hump added to make room for the shifter.

There is another 4 speed OD out there after they quit building the 833's. I saw one attached to a V-6 D150 of 80's vintage.......

Up to 1987 the A-833OD and in the larger service trucks the NP235/435 continued to serve....After that they went to something else, but I have seen 1988-1989 Trucks with an NP-235( and 360-usually)...the bellhousing for the later trucks are different than ours, so no easy bolt up...the trannies bolted to the 3.9,5.2,5.9L magnum engines could bolt up but again you need the mid-late 60's A-727 adapter plate to start.

Your next best option but is more $$$ is to have a bellhousing modified and run a T-5 from a later vehicle (Ford Ranger...etc...)

Sounds like a A 833-generic Mopar 4 speed,their where 2 types,4 speed and a 4 spped overdrive.Both look the same.Both can have aluminim cases.You best bet is still finding a crashed,junked or rusted out loaner .In the long run its cheaper and you have an idea of what its suppose to look like beside all of the parts + a suplus to stock,sell or trade.Dont be in a hurry to grab whatever to convert or later you'll be kicking yourself because of haveing to fabricate someting else to fit or cant find all the parts.
