I just bought a 1967 A100 van and i was told it had a 1975 slant in it. I found the casting number sheet here and the head matches to a 1975, that's good.

Checking over the van i found that the balancer has spun. So, this is my problem

The balancer has two belt grooves, my setup uses the groove closest to the radiator. But, the part that has the timing marks and the groove i need, bolts to the first groove pulley with the hub attached. The bolts that hold it together, come in from the timing cover side (no way to un-bolt with it on the engine)

Is this normal? Can i buy just the grooved damper? I found DOC (that rebuilds them) has a 2 groove balancer but is that what i need?

I've searched alot here but i haven't seen what i have.

The bolt-on pulley must have had a use (power steering, air-pump, or air-conditioner) if you have none of these a single pulley damper should work.

But my water pump pulley lines up with the other groove

On your A-100 van, the alternator should mount on the driver's side of the motor, yes? I have never worked on an A series van, but I bet you will have one set of pulleys that lines up with the alternator, water pump, and crank pulley.

Does your alternator using the back groove or the front groove (some have 2 grooves). I'm not sure about vans but cars use the back groove.

Yes, the alt is on the drivers side and the belt uses the 2nd groove away from the timing cover. I put a GM one wire alt on it, so i can set it back but i would need a different water pump pulley. I want to put a/c on it later so i really want to use a 2 groove crank pulley.

John, the pulley closest to the timing cover is a bolt on piece, to run the A/C. You need to get a new/rebuilt damper, and then transfer the bolt on pulley to your new damper. The damper you need just has one grove.
The groove in the damper is for the alternator, and water pump.

I'm still messing with this, but i did have to replace the radiator and i did get some pictures of it. The groove closest to the timing cover is not used.(doesn't line up with anything) For the engines that have only one groove, are they close or spaced out from the timing cover?

Charrlie_S , i looked at your post awhile back and it wasn't until just now that i see what you mean. I was thinking of it backwards. So if i buy either of the popular aftermarket balancers (Australia or professional products) I shouldn't have a problem?

PS: I would be interested in buying the A/C pulley, from the old damper.
