ok, so coming home today from work if I gave my car more than 1/8 peddle gas it started sputtering and trying to die, and if I gave it 1/2 gas it did die. I limped it to the previous owners house and the dad is a slant fanatic, so he said either fuel pump or filter. What do you guys think? In park I can rev it all day long but the moment I put it in gear and I'm either going down the road or with my foot on the brake it sputters. Oh and my "rental" vehicle is a '82 Dodge D150 with a super six upgrade with a 74 block and head with a A-833 OD in it, its for sale and pretty nice for the asking price of 1100

Don't forget about the float in the carburetor, and the inlet valve.

Can you hold the throttle open about 1/3 of the way in park/neutral without it sputtering? It sounds to me like you have a partially plugged main circuit in the Carb, or you inlet valve/float are behaving so badly that its barely keeping fuel in the bowl.

Yes I can hold the throttle wherever I want while the motor has no load on it, but if I put load on it I can hardly press the gas without it sputtering.

I have a similar problem so I'm curious to see some more suggestions or what you did to fix it.

After I put the 1920 back on my truck that I got from you it lopes like crazy. Had it on three days then all of a sudden started doing the same thing except it will only run when the accelerator pump is feeding it. Rev it some and it's fine for a bit, then does it again. No one even replied to my thread.

Mine was the bowl gasket, so maybe look into that, seeing how we made our own

Well shoot I tore the whole thing down yesterday and it was still the same. Did notice there were little hairline cracks all over the carb from just being old so half of it is covered in jb weld. Found a new accelerator pump diaphram for my 1945 so I put that on. Runs better and doesn't lope just dont have advance.

Working on problems like this is a hands on thing. It's not something that lends itself well to a virtual experience.

Plugged jets/passages

Faulty accelerator pump

vacuum leaks

EGR operation

Float levels

Foreign matter elsewhere in the fuel system

Timing issues

Bad gas.

Thanks cj! I noticed that when I pressed the gas I wasnt getting the shot of fuel I usually see so I am going to clean it out really good and see if it just got something in the system, and I ordered a rebuild kit just for giggles, if I don't use it on this carb I'll rebuild one of my other 1920s. I checked for vacuum leaks and it was air tight yesterday morning when it was running.

Well I got it fixed, got the correct fuel bowl gasket in it and it sealed right up and runs great.
