local shop that does cam and crank grindings in Anaheim. Rubens Cams. they were fine years ago when i did my chevy stuff, now they seem to be big assholes

I don't speak for others, but the last two Comp cams I've run (of three total) needed the dist/oil gear teeth finished. The hobbing was quite rough and still faceted, like it hadn't been final cut.

That said, I still have the 264 in Toad, works well for my hauling/towing package.

No problems once I polished'em up, but that's not something you should have to do for a "plug & play" retail item.

Not particularly relevant, but I'm running an Erson (long intake cut) in the HAMBster now.

I've got no idea on the Comp 252 slant. I do have the small block version in my van. It has gobs of torque especially with the 2200 stall converter.

Also having good luck with a Comp Cams 252, but I think I've read other posts that say it's basically a stock cam copy. I will agree with that and recommend a different cam based on what you're building. For me (a 318 Carter 2-BBL, shaved/ported/polished head, headers into duals), that cam is not enough.

Up here in Puget Sound I had Delta regrind my stock cam for $35.00. It is called a 254S duration .435 lift. I believe it is a copy or close to the COMP Cams 252. It makes the engine very spunky with the increased compression and distributor recurve. It has good manners and great mileage. Better than stock in terms of fun to drive. The torque comes on right off idle.......no sluggishness. I drive twisty roads along the foothills and my Dart Swinger is a blast to drive. The stock cam is not as (spunky), quick to respond.

As far as replacement cam specs- both Napa and Elgin industries list them-but the only differences in the aftermarket grinds are solid or hyro lifters.The 252 comp comes close to a stock solid after market replacement cam. You could always try Howards cams but they need a good core to grind and the last I heard they have someone in South Carolina regrind them.

hey im back from a long trip to hudson iowa. anyways i got my new fancy starrett mag base/dial indicator, and rolled the cam over, its actually only .255 lift (not the 260 he told me), and with the stock 1.5 lifter thats a total of .382 SOUNDS LIKE A WAY SMALLER CAM then any of the stock ones ive seen.. Lovely isnt it?? im getting all these comp cam numbers from you guys...

im just wanting the best stock cam which seems like the "marine cam"? or if there is a more bennificial custom grind for a stock setup.

i called oregon, and they said they had 2 more popular grinds for the slant, which is 219@50 and .440 lift. then the smaller one was 212@50 and .430 lift.

I'm going to be blunt. Screw popular. Get the best thing you can. A single pattern cam is not the best choice, but I have run the #819 which is the longer duration one you listed. With some head work and compression it ran very well, but it's still not optimum.

well give me the optimum grind spec for a stock motor, with the single barrel.

I did that on the first page of this thread. The smaller Erson reverse dual pattern or Oregon #125.
