 Post subject: Starter relay

Hey everyone

I'm trying to clean up the wires in my engine bay. I got the underhood fuse box from a 96 dodge caravan. I had a thought when redoing the wiring for my hei, can I use a new style Bosch relay instead of the old one? I have a rough idea on how to wire it but I want to know if I can actually do it. If anyone has done it can you tell me which wires go to which prong on the relay?

Sorry Ross, forget the link above! did not read your question properly, and thought you meant the HEI relay, my mistake.

On the other hand, the numbers on Bosch starter relays are standardized, and they are usually the same as on the other Bosch relays:

30 is power entry from source, usually the battery
85 is ground
86 is the trigger input that activates the relay
87 is power from the relay when it is activated

Thanks for the Info Olaf. I also was wondering which wire goes where. Ie: which prong the wire from the starter goes I know 85 is ground does the wire from the starter go to 87 and the wire from the ignition switch when in start go to 86? Then 30 would just be from the fusible link.

I don’t know if a Bosh type plug-in relay will do what it is you have in mind, but take a look here for better understanding of how relay works, and is wired.

Thanks for the link. Here is my understanding from what I read. The start is a high voltage circuit the ignition switch is a low circuit. When I put the ignition in start it completes a circuit to the relay thus switching the relay which in turn would send power to the starter. Am I correct?

Your getting there, just need to understand a few terms. The only high voltage (power) in an automobile’s electrical system is from the secondary winding of the coil that produces 35,000 to 45,000 volts (center electrode to the distributor and plugs). The rest is all 12 volts excepting on our cars; five volts from one side of ceramic ignition ballast to primary side of coil.

I think what you were trying to say was a that a low current circuit controls a high current circuit by an electronic switch activated by an electromagnet...

What happens when ignition is turned on, a small current activates an electro magnet, which operates a high current slave switch capable of handling high current flow need for the starter, other high draw devices such as horn, convertible top, over the top sound systems etc.

Ross, you will find lots of starter relay wiring diagrams on the net; google 'bosch starter relay wiring diagram'. and you'll get some 42500 hits!

Here is a link to a very useful 44 page general Relay application guide (pdf).
