Got a set on my '64 Chev Pickup. '66 250 with six into two. Dual side pipes in front of the driver's side tire, straight out.

Obonoxiously loud and needs more jet and less timing.

That's what we run on our Dart race car. Clifford shorties + glasspacs. Makes us legal for sportsman class. Kinda loud for the street.

Did on my 82. Straight pipe with a flowtech red-hot. Came out before the rear right tire. It was too quiet for me so now it's all straight pipe from the stock manifold back

if I read these post right..with a stock exhaust manifold the glasspack is to quiet but with headers it's to loud?

We are looking for excellent flow but livable...as a kid I had a nice sounding exhaust but could not drive (150 miles ) it to the Ocean City , Maryland without a headache...and that was no fun.

basically what is a good flow that is quiet or is that not possible...

67 D100, hooker 6/1 header with Cherry Bomb muffler, single exhaust. it was pretty loud, my wife could hear me going to work for about a half mile away, unless i was making a "test run" and she could hear a good bit further. sounded like a big bumble bee.

Well I'm a young guy so I like loud stuff. IMO it wasn't loud enough for me. For an older guy it was probably fine.

Acoustics from the driver's seat is way different for a pickup vs a sedan or wagon. I've run "straight - thru" systems with manifold & headers on several A bodies (SuperSix & tweaked EFI setup). In both cases a single muffler caused some obnoxiously (headache) loud resonances at 3000-4000rpm. It got bad after an hour or so. Adding a glasspack "resonator" to the tailpipe helped tremendously.

When I swapped the EFI eng to a '75 Dart, I had to install a (high flow) cat conv - which acted as a pre-resonator- so I got rid of the glass pack on that car.

the school of thought i was raised on is that a more restrictive (usually quieter) exhaust with more "back pressure" improves low end torque while a less restrictive (usually louder) exhaust improves upper rpm horsepower.

i haven't seen a lot of posts here discussing exhaust "back pressure" and am anxious to hear some opinions on this subject as it pertains to engine tuning.

Back pressure is a negative. If the engine runs better with back pressure then it was not tuned properly to begin with. Adding a muffler can change the acoustic tuning of the exhaust which results in a power increase, but it is not the back pressure of the muffler which gave the increased performance. Add in changes to carburetor function and it gets really complex, but never does an engine with back pressure make more power than a correctly tuned one without back pressure.

Ran dual exhaust with a set of glass packs hated every second of them only because they sound like a chainsaw and it's not because i mind really loud exhaust i'd rather drive with open header considering it sounds deeper. The glass packs sounded like a bigger honda 4cyl with a fart can. Took them off and gave them to my buddy with a 289 stang almost can't go wrong with muffler sound choices on a v8.

Take look here for an exhausting discussion on removing combustion products from ones engine.

I have a glasspack on my Volare with a slant six. I'm an older guy, but it's not too loud, in my opinion. I have Dutra Duals.
