Lights dimming when you hit the brakes sounds like bad ground at light socket.

It certainly sounds like a bad ground - the current for the running lights is going through both filaments because of the bad ground, so while each is dimmer than it ought to be, there's 2 of them. The bad ground could be between the housing and the body or between the sockets and the housing or both - I've seen them all. I've also seen the problems come and go. A decent multimeter will help you track down the problem - start with the housing to a *good* ground (usually the trunk latch is a good spot), then the sockets. Sometimes cleaning the screws is enough; sometimes not.

I am electrically retarded.
Fault in fuse block itself with a ground (short) in the bundle of wires
running into the fuse block also.
thanks
robert
