ok. this is my first post regarding actual issues and it's one of my favorite "problems" with my car.

so - my right turn indicator on the dash is out. checked the bulb. dead.
that's just an aside.
with the headlights on, the signals work normally on the outside of the car, but if you turn on the right signal nothing happens on the dash (just the clicking of the signal). if you're turning left, the speedometer and the small red light below the oil light blink on and off. like, where the green arrow should illuminate, the dial lights up, then when the arrow would turn off normally, the dial blacks out and the red light comes on.
I'm pretty sure that's right. I've had it for a month and a half and haven't taken it out at night much, so I'm only pretty sure that that's what exactly blinks or doesn't and I don't want to go wake the old guy up right now and check.
if it's wrong, I'll update.

also, my gas gauge is out. I know, I know. I drive a 65 Dart.
I keep a record of my mileage, so I haven't run out yet (and don't want him to suck up whatever swill is hanging around on the bottom of the tank.

so - any ideas? and am I looking at replacing my whole gas gauge or can I get around this?

thanks guys!
Manda

Manda,

Could be the directional signal bulb on left has escaped from its housing and is dangling in back of gage cluster. You may be able to reach up and reinstall the light & socket in its hole... Or you may have to pull cluster to see what is wrong

Gas gage can be checked by disconnecting its wire at the gas tank sending unit, and grounding that wire with a jumper to a good grounding point on under side of the car with ignition switch in on position. Once grounded, gage should read full if working.

Next get a VOM (volt ohm meter) check the resistance of sending unit by contacting lug or electrode the gas gage wire was plug onto, and ground the other lead of the VOM to body of sending unit. Set meter on 200 ohm scale. If sending unit is electrically competent, or rather not shorted out, you will see a reading between 73 ohms empty (+/- 12 ohms), and 9.9 ohms (+/- 1 ohm) full.

The last item that needs to be in good order is the Sending Unit Ground Strap. This is a long flat strip of metal with clips either end that electrically connects the sending unit chassis to the metal fuel line which is electrically a ground and same as minus side of battery.
