I have been thinking about the aisin warner aw4 transmission, as fitted to jeep cherokees.
Does anyone have any comments on these transmissions?
Does anyone have a good reason why I shouldn't try to fit one to a 225 in a -67 valiant?

In my jeep, I really like it, and think it would suit the 225 pretty well.

My idea is to use the australian borg warner 35 bellhousing, jeep aw4, and maybe, if I need "more" a toyota 3.0v6 converter, as they are a bit on the "high stall" side.

That unit does not get good "reviews"...
The challenges for our A-Body cars is the unit is wide at the rear of the case and the fact that it's electronically shifted.

Yep, it tends to run hot, but with a good cooler, I have seen them live in pretty tough conditions. If I fit the toyota converter, the heat would go up even more, I guess, but it has lockup...so...I dunno...

The electrics are not really an issue, for me, anyway.

Iit is pretty wide at the back, and I have to measure things before I do anything.

BUT, it is after all going in a relatively lightweight, low power car... I think it should live for a while...


I am not saying it is a great idea, but I think it would be worth thinking about, and maybe it would work ok?

I think you're better off adapting a GM 200-4R or Chrysler A500 unless this AW4 fits under the stock floor.

You might be right... But what is "wrong" with the aw4?

This is kinda why I asked here... Anyone I ask, say they wouldn't bother, but I still have not heard any real reason WHY...

Yes, if I have to cut the floor much, that is a good enough reason for...probably most people.
But say I had an A100 van, with tons of room, and still not too heavy, why not?

Other transmissions are proven to be more reliable and efficient. They have better aftermarket support and do not require a full computer. The electronics you say are no problem for you, but are you to be the only owner for the rest of the vehicles life?

The Aw4 is a great transmission how do I know I have one in my cherokee Rock Crawler and it has 214K miles on it with out a rebuild. The computer is easy to work around you can even rig it to full manual shifting. However it does run hot and is way expensive to rebuild. I know before long mine will bite the dust so I started pricing it out. A master rebuild kit minus the hard parts or selinoids is $850-950. When AW4 goes it will get a 727 in its place.
