Gentlemen...quick question. I will preface it by saying that I have a turn-signal switch that is on the way, so if that does fix my problem, I guess this is a wasted post.

When I turn the steering wheel either direction, I will occasionally get a little chirp from the horn. When I make a hard, sustained turn (like turning the car around in my cul de sac) the horn will occasionally go off full blast. Imagine my surprise the first time that happened while turning and I scared a bunch of people in their yard.

Anyway, could this be a pinched wire or something like that? I'm hesitant to take apart the steering column, but I'll be installing the new turn-signal switch at some point this week, and I'd rather not beep at people every time I make a turn in my car.

Common problem? Thoughts or suggestions for a starting spot?

“Soundsâ€￾ like a chafed wire to me somewhere in the column. Firstly pull steering wheel center to check for detached or poor connection of horn wire. If not that, time to pull the steering wheel etc. for a look see of condition of wires housed in column, and condition of brass wheel the contacts back side of steering wheel. In the mean time, if all the honking is too much for your neighbor’s nerves, pull the horn wire off of the relay.

Isn't that wire replaced with the turn signal switch and harness that runs down through the steering column?

Now that you mention is I think the horn is feed through one of the wires pigtailed from the directional switch… in fact I know it is.

The six or so wires from directional switch to under dash harness are mated in a flat ribbon, or pigtail side by side. It is very possible that one or more of them are chafed from ridding on steering shaft for forty years. But first examine the little brass roller that makes contact from steering wheel to circular race on turn signal switch; it could be loose, broken, or out of position.

Or as I discovered on my car, someone had poorly spliced & taped all of the signal switch’s wires mid way down the steering column. This crappie wiring job was causing some problems, as well as it being all loose & floppy. A new switch cured all the ills.

I'll be looking at it when I put the switch in, so I'm hoping that it will be solved by the switch. If not, I'll just put a button switch in to pass the inspection and then disconnect it. Or just pass inspection and then disconnect the horn so that I don't beep at my neighbors as I turn past them.
