I have a problem with my D-150 I've never seen before. I can't get the distributor out! But first let me backtrack and give yall some background information.

This all started when my D-150 wouldn't start last week. It still has the lean burn computer and the dual pickup distributor with the later style hold-down. After some troubleshooting I noticed that the rotor wouldn't move when the engine was turned over. Ok that's no problem, I've had slant sixes break distributor gears before and they were a simple fix (hardest part was putting it back in and getting it timed on the first try).

Then the trouble started, I removed the hold down bolt and tried to remove the distributor. It wouldn't budge. So I pulled harder, and it will only rise up 1/4 inch and that's it. I've pulled the distributor on my Duster more times than I care to remember when I recurved it and I've never seen a problem like this. On top of that, I can't spin the rotor by like I could before when the gear broke. It's just stuck in that one position.

Anybody have any idea what is going on here? The truck was running fine before this happened.

Might be a peice of the gear jamed in there, try rotating the motor backwards to see if it will free up the distributer.

Already tried that, didn't work. Thanks anyway.

I'm not that worried about trashing the distributor, since this is the excuse I've been looking for to ditch the lean burn and put my super six setup on it. The only thing on the distributor I want to save is the holddown. I'm just worried that something else might be wrong besides just a broken gear.

you do have holddown all way off???? spray some pentrating oil on base and rotate ...let sit overnite ...spray more in orning and rotate ....
pry it out

I have had distributors on other motors get a build up of sludge/carbon/varnish or whatever, and they would not pull out easily. they would rotate in the seated position, but would not come out. These were V8 motors and I just pulled and pried until they came out. Might try and use some PB Blaster or carb/brake cleaner and see if you can get some down there to see if that helps any. You would/should change the oil afterwards. Just some thoughts.....

Yes the hold down bolt is completely out. The distributor body will turn like it's supposed to.

You are probably right about the gummed up/sludge part. The distributor on this truck has never been pulled for all of it's 250,000 miles. Hard to believe the plastic gear and the lean burn computer lasted this long.

I'll try the penetrating oil and see if I can wiggle it out with two small prybars.

If the rotor won't turn, maybe a timing chain/gear failure..??

Stuck a big screwdriver between the block and the flange on the distributor and it popped right out. Still have no clue what was holding it in.

It seems very oily, and it is surprising how old, stale lube can make a vacuum situation, making it difficult to break the oil film tension.
My 2¢.

That plate is to cover the hole in the body...your pickup plate is fixed and has no provision to accept vacc. advance...you'd have to swap out the whole assembly from a regular distributor and a pickup from an autoparts store...
