I have a 73 Scamp, trying to order parts for it. The car is currently getting an engine installed and i want to order the brakes and drums for it. It sat a long time and everything is frozen up. I can only get to the backside right now. I put a ruler on the front and back, and both drums seem to have an outside dimension of about 13" (measuring across the back), would those be 10" brakes? I really cannot get at the wheels right now to pull them, hoping someone will know. Also, i notice that the front brake drums get much more expensive after 73, anyone know why? Is it just the ribbing on the drum or just supply and demand?

'73 model year changed a number of things including the spindle diameter and therefore the hub and bearing sizes. Also the ball joints, steering box, center link, and on and on.

Only sure way is to get the drum off and measure the ID, but they are likely 10". If it is 4.5X5 bolt circle then they are even more likely to be 10". You can back off the adjuster through a little oblong hole in the backing plate near the bottom. Please find a service manual if this does not make sense to you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the size of the drum stamped on the outer face of the drum on the wheel mounting surface?

The car is currently in the shop with the motor pulled and on ramps and i cannot take the wheels off right now, so i was hoping to get the parts ordered before we got to that part.

Yup. Or measure the inside diameter of the drum or skip this step and refer back to number one.

My 73' Scamp has 9" drums 4X5 bolt circle. Did they even put 10's on this year and model?

They have had 10" brakes on a bodies since the 60's. They were standard on V8's and optional for 6's.

My 75 has 10's in the rear and disk up front most of the A bodies I've owned have all been 10's. You should be set with that size. What else do you plan to replace other then pads and drums?

not really sure yet, the car only had 29k on it, but it sat for 30 years untouched. I have not pulled the wheels off at all yet, but there are no brakes when you press the pedal, and the backing plates have heavy scale rust on them. THe engine was frozen from sitting. Currently the car is motorless, jacked up and unmoveable. I just cannot take the wheels off now, but i can wait until the car has the new engine in and then check it out, i am just ordering parts all the time and wanted to have the stuff ready.

I have brand new 10" brake shoes for a 73' I can't use. I am selling them see here http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46176
I will sell them to you cheaper than what I have listed. Hell, I'll sell them for $15 and if you can find them for cheaper than that I'll match prices or cheaper.
