So, I was thinking Saturday while I was working on the Valiant (a good thing I guess)...do the spark plugs have any sort of cover or something? I put new wires on, and it seemed to me that there might be some sort of boot or something that would cover the entire hole that the plugs fit in to. Just curious...

The original plugs are designed so that they cover the holes, you can still find wires with those kind of plugs.

Look at ebay item 370523553729 to see what they look like.

Ahh...makes sense. Well, since I already bought the wires and I don't feel like spending more cash, any other options?

Drive and enjoy. Its not going to hurt anything to run it without the factory wire boots. In the forteen years I drove my slant, I never had the boots on and never had a problem.

Just make sure the plug wires have some sort of boot that will cover the terminal on the plugs. Otherwise you might get arcing to ground and you will shock yourself (don't ask me how I know this).

I'm not worried about the operation. The engine is sorta dirty underneath, but you can see the orange paint shining through the dirt. The valve cover is orange and I'd like it to match, so I bought a can of my old friend Engine Bright. My first thought was to wrap some rags around the holes so that when I spray it (lightly) with the hose it won't get any water into the spark plug area. Just got me to wondering, that's all.

You can put the old air-cooled VW boot covers on the replacement wires if you want.........

Just got my rubber boots in the mail today from Jeb, my brother from another mother. Thanks for doing me a solid man! I owe you a few beers next time you're in Delaware.
