I seem to remember a thread a long time ago where people chimed in with places they knew of with cool "car related" names. It was a pretty extensive list, but I don't think anyone ever mentioned knowing of a place called "Mopar". That's my vote!

11170: This one's a headscratcher. Should be a simple calendar date like 8 22 (August 22) or 3 11 (March 11) but there are too many digits. If we decode it as 11 17 that's November 17, 1960, which IIRC is too early (before the start of aluminum-block production); would need to double-check that. And we're left with a terminal 0 to wonder about. If we decode it as 1 11, that's January 11, 1961, which is a valid production date for an aluminum block, but leaves us with a terminal 70 to wonder about. Sometimes extra numbers are stamped according to no consistent rhyme or reason...line number, shift number, etc. The FPC says "If a number appears after date built, this is for internal purposes only." So most likely this is 1 11 (January 11, 1961) with a terminal 70 that doesn't mean anything.

The star at the end of the number is also a bit of a mystery. A Maltese Cross at this location would indicate undersize rod and/or main bearings, but I don't have a ref for a five-pointed star. Given the extra "70", I'm inclined to guess this was a "check" block followed through the production process, perhaps to keep an eye on certain aspects of line timing or tool usage.

From the bits of turquoise metallic paint left on the block, it appears this engine was originally installed in a 1961 full-size Plymouth or (big) Dodge Dart. See engine paint thread here.

Thanks for the information. I too don't understand the coding. Do you have any idea on the serial numbers on the bellhousing flange? I know the pictures are not great. There are lots of stamped numbers and a few letters. Any ideas?

Rob, don't have but the one now. I have been selling parts ever since I knew I was retiring from the government. Sold the Dart and the Barracuda before I left VA and now since the Colt and the Lancer were stolen, I only have my Norton to put back together. Going to focus on a slant race car and just be done with it. I am in the market for another Hyper Pac and this time I will kill the SOB who even thinks about borrowing it. If I am lucky I will find one. I had the other one for 41 years, I appologize to the slant six nation for losing mine. And the wagon.
