I'm pretty sure the later gearbox should fit,do a few measurements on both.

Thanks Al , the main trouble seems to be that in low reves in 2nd and less so in 1st there is a whining grinding sort of noise but it shuts up as you in crease speed and no noise at all once in top gear, I put a new clutch in 3 months ago and replaced the throwout bearing etc while i was at it., i checked the gear box bearings and everything seemed nice and tight. Could it be the rear universal joint or the funny front uni joint? RAY

I put a 3 speed out of a VJ(same as the ones in the VE,VF)into my AP6 when i had it.
Do you have column shift ?
If so you will need the linkages from the steering column end to the gearbox arms of the later models as mentioned above.
The reason for this is because where the linkages are on the side of the AP5/AP6 box are higher up than on the later models.
You will also need a different tailshaft,as the later model gearbox has a spline front yoke instead of the ball and trunnion like on the AP5 tailshaft,i used one of VJ ute,it still had enough travel in it even with it lowered 2 inches at the rear.
You will also need the actual linkages on the later model gearbox as well.
Cheers,
Greg
