Actually I was amused with the findings in the thread. Although they didn't exactly go the route I expected. Also, I've been kind of neglecting my own thread so no harm, no foul.

I'm actually interested in going halfses with someone on that dual exhaust setup, but I'd want the drivers side... and I'm wondering about the size of the tube. Any gurus have insight on the 2.5" all the way back? Its been said many times that 2.25" to the muffler followed by 2" out the back is the most frequently recommended size.

As for getting bends and cutting them up, wouldn't the high number of seams negate any value you get from the mandrel bends? Also, I don't have a good means to cut the pipe with, so unless someone nearby wants to help out, that is not really an option for me, but good idea nevertheless.

I do have a question about where I can dump the tailpipe... I think the rear would look nice if there were no visible tailpipe, so I was thinking of having it go over the rear axle and coming down and toward the wheel and just leaving it there (so it wouldn't be visible from behind the car). The concern there is 1) is it safe or does it need to go back further, and 2) will it sound like crap?

The exhaust needs to dump out a little past the extremity of the bodywork. To do as you suggest is extremely unsafe, and in many states illegal. You could turn the corner early and dump out at a 45° downward and 45° outboard angle in the middle of the lower edge of the quarter panel as was done on full-size Chevrolets of the early-mid '60s, but you'll regret it the first time you're stuck in traffic next to a wall or a line of cars; you'll get an exhaust stink in the car.

I would be interested in going half with you. I am going with a super6 soon and I need the 2.25" sometime. I don't own but have access to tube benders and a saw for means of cutting pipe. I also own an welder. I'm only about an hour south of you.

I'm thinking maybe go with the 2.50 to the muffler then 2" out the back.
Or just use the piping from the stock exhaust from the muffler back, it's almost 2" (1-7/8" right? 1/8 short of 2" = damn close enough for me!) No extra piping would need to be purchased that route.

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade but you guys do realize in the that in the overview for the Jeg's link that it says mufflers are sold separately. Yes? Kinda deceiving to put them in the pic and not include them in the kit.

I forget the guys name, he's a member on the forums here from up in Everett, WA. He's got piles of mufflers, just tons of them! Not sure if he still has them but he was letting them go for cheap.

But like you said it is kind of deceiving. :x :evil: :twisted:

Not sure what you are reading but it clearly states "with mufflers" in the ad :

If you click on the "Overview" tab on that page, it lists kits without mufflers also. That's what I was looking at.

Depends on what car that you are trying to purchase the kit for. the content and the price changes.

Well I understand that much of the exhaust restriction is due not only to pipe diameter but the the type of the muffler so my guess is that it might be fine to run 2.50" pipe back to muffler and 2" pipe out back of muffler for a super six setup despite 2.25" pipe recommendation (and factory spec) and as long as the muffler is stock type and not straight-through type muffler?

Some how I think my theory is that with the less restrictive 2.50" pipe the stock type muffler restriction would "counter" the slightly larger diameter pipe...if that is even needed, let alone can more performance be gained going a quarter inch larger diameter pipe?

Has anyone done this? :?:

I feel your pain.

There is s sweet spot where less restrictive, vs. hot gas velocity changes efficiency of exhaust system. Too large of a diameter and flow slows and savaging pulse is diminished, too small diameter and flow is restricted where too much energy is required to push gas along. Same with muffler, once flow enters a muffler all flow and acoustical dynamics change depending on physical design of box. To add to all this, flow rate changes as exhaust gases cool on their trip to end of system.

Too large a pipe makes for poor flow. Too small pipe restricts flow. Poorly chosen muffler equates to restriction, poor sound abatement and flow, and tail pipe size can impede flow, or enhance flow depending on size. Oh overall length is also a factor as well as single vs. duel, Y pipe, X pipe etc…

It ain’t easy as all engine combinations such as stock to race builds, number of cylinders and engine configurations (V & I) have different requirements as well. It’s enough to make one’s head expload.

I have been mulling this exhaust system matter over for several years now, and have not figured out what I need to make the sound I desire with beneficial flow characteristics. So for now, I just replaced both mufflers to quiet the car down enough so that radio is auditable now when under way, and the /6 drone greatly lessened.
