In my search to get my ignition timing set correctly I have wandered on down to the timing set. At first I thought the harmonic balnacer outer ring had spun, but it's dead nuts perfect. Opened up the timing cover and found my OEM (1974) timing set w/ 1" of slop in chain.

If I can still get the marks to align, it's unlikely that the chain has jumped a tooth, correct ? (the car ran easily and started fine but ignition timing was all over the road.)

The engine is still in the car and assembled, do I really need to degree the stock (100,000 mile) cam in or just line up the dots and go ?

Any favorites or conversely, brands to stay away from when it comes to timing sets and gasket sets ??

Whatever set you get replace it with a good brand duel row timing chain,they seem to last a lot longer.

Another AP5 valiant still going strong.

i rebuilt my slant around the end of 09'... i did the upgrade as mentioned, double row timing set from autozone (think it was a cloyes) and it lasted 6K miles before it was loose and marks was jumpy...

now i run a JP double ROLLER...

these double row sets you buy are still links not rollers, so spend a little extra coin and use a rollermaster or a JP and probably never have to change it again...

Autozone only sells the silent chain cloyes replacement, you can buy from them the components separately if you can hand the guy the part numbers (the boxes won't be marked cloyes though)...

JP is OK, our last group buy seems to be OK, I still have a MP roller set going strong after 70K on it (between 2 engines...)...

So, for longevity the vote is go with a double roller and stay away from the "silent" variety ??

At this point hughes engine, ebay and rockauto are out for double rollers. I cant find any contact infor for cox brothers anymore. Are they still in business ?? Any other leads ?

Order the following parts from your local auto parts store to piece a set together:

Crank: Cloyes S339
Cam: Cloyes S338
Chain: Cloyes C168

I hope these have the "dots" to line up this chain as i do not have a degree wheel nor the desire to do this to the engine while it's still in my car. On an engine stand in front of me would be great. lol

Sounds like mine.Put a cloyes stock single slider in it from O' Reileys and advance the cam to align.Then had to retard the ignition timing by 20 degrees but runs strong now.

Since your in Addison, you can look up the double roller chain and gears with Elgin Industries on line catalog.They won't sell direct,Machine Parts in St Charles sells them-talk to Tim- they rebuild all the slant 6's for Chicago power.
