I have a question about reman. distributors, Does anyone know if A1 Cardone dist. come with the holddown bracket? I just ordered one as my last part for my HEI conversion/leanburn elimination and I know the leanburn bracket won't fit.

thanks
Kevin

Of the distributors I have seen, the cores are the same, regardless of application. The brackets bolt onto the bottom for the two different hold downs, and are interchangeable. . I would take the ring off your lean burn, and put in on the bottom of the new one.

Reman distributors do not come with the holddown plate or collar.
If you sent yours in it's gone...

You can bolt either the pre-1979 plate to the distributor and use it, or you can use the 1979-1987 collar and "claw" holddown. The late one being more desired as you aren't limited by the plate slots if dialing a lot of advance.

Also Reman distributors are a "crap shoot" on what the curve is and what governor you got. So you may need to take some time to map it out with a dialback timing light, tach, and a vacc. pump...to see where you are at and where it needs to be.

Good Luck,

I haven't sent my old one in, the core charge is only $5 anyway so I was just gonna keep it. Slant six's just don't exist in the junkyards around here hence the reman. dist. I ordered the dist. for a 1978 D100 thinking in my feeble mind that the curve would be close, you don't think so? I'm not trying to go racing here, just want a reasonably reliable DD, and have a little fun along the way :D

Cardone's stuff is unreliable garbage. New distributors are easily available and don't cost a lot.

As a professional ASE certified auto technician with 15 yrs. experience, I install Cardone's "garbage" on an almost daily basis. In my experience with the volume of their parts I use I have a very low percentage of failures and if I do have a problem, my supplier is always right on top of it and quick to remedy it.They are readily available to me (same day delivery) unlike these "new" parts of which u speak, therefore I will continue to use them.
Thank you for your opinion.

Kevin

Cardone just mix and matches stuff on the rebuild, the 1978 D100 distributor should have an 11R or 13R governor...The Cardone distributors I've pulled apart over the last few years recurving them for others were anything from a 15L governor(1973-1975 Car), 11R (1976-1978 Car some types), or if you're lucky you might get a 9R governor (1976 some models, 1978+ super six cars)....The only thing that is "stable" is they use the same generic vacc. can that allow 20 degrees of vacc. advance, but the can does not allow for adjustment of the diaphragm so you are stuck with when it comes in (for better or worse).

Pull the pickup plate and check the slots and stamp and see what you got.
If a 15L you might be able to set the initial at 5BTDC at best (factory would be TDC/"0"). If any of the others you'll adjust up to the formula of:
30-(2*governor stamp)=max. initial setting (So if you got an 11L: 30-22=8BTDC).

Also if you may want to check the bushing clearances most of the Cardones I've pulled apart have too much clearance to last more than 10K miles...

Good Luck,

Welp, as the surgeon said to the patient at the Budget Value Self-Surgery Center, "Suture Self!". There are plenty of people, "professional" and otherwise, who have been installing Fram oil filters on cars for years and have never been aware of a problem. I don't go to those garages, either.

OK, as long as the pickup is working, your golden.

Next up is the question of the mechanical advance and vac advance.

Now, as things go, it's a darn good idea to figure out what your mechanical advance is, and how much vac advance your going to put in.
Borrow or buy a dial back gun and find out what your have.

Daily drivers are what they are. Building out for drag racing is another matter.

We all meet somewhere in the middle.

Find out what you have. It doesen't take much to look into it, and then we might be able to help you with better power, economy and perhaps find a way to get you to join us on the dark side... Scooting down the quarter! (We have cookies!)
Nothing like telling the guys waiting for checks at the tower that you ran on three gallons of pump premium that you bought last year!

Anyway, keep us posted on where your at.

thank u for the info on this gentlemen, I don't know if I'll get to the HEI swap today as I still need to reinstall the fuel tank and sort out a throttle cable for my 2 barrel setup. I will keep everyone posted.

didn't get to drop the dist. in today, I did get the fuel tank and throttle cable taken care of, and got all of the leanburn wiring pulled out.

what a mess of crap, there was even more when I was finished.

Everything taped back up.

I took the time to remove all of the wiring because I can't stand a half a$$ed job.
