My boss has a 61 wagon with a floor mount 3 speed and he wants to swap in a auto, is this just a case of finding a 904a and a flexplate? He also wants to have a floor mount shifter, most likely to cover, of use the hole that is there. Please give me some guidance.

There is a little more to it then "just find a SL6 904 & flex plate"...

My first question is on the starter motor type, does the vehicle currently have a "direct drive" early Prestolite / Bendex starter or does it have a "later" gear reduction" starter? (122 ring gear teeth)

For a period correct installation, the 60 - 64 "cable shift" 904 would be a good choice but these all used a dash mounted "pushbutton" shifter.

The 904 auto will need throttle pressure or "kickdown" linkage.

Any automatic will, need a trans fluid cooler.

Thank you for the info I am going to go look at the car wed I am giving him my old holley 1920. I wish he would let me hook the push button and fix the hole.

A good "Plan B" would be to use the 1965 cable 904 wiuth the optional floor shifter. That would be the last year of the "cable shift / flanged output 904 so the current driveshaft and speetometer cable would "bolt-in".

The trouble is that this is a "1 year only" set-up so finding all the needed parts could be a challenge.

I have one, that I picked up at a swap meet. I would have to check and see if it is complete, or if there are parts missing. If you are interested, let me know, and I will dig it out.

we talked about it and we are going to try to install the push button. His car does not have the controlls those. Is this a hard thing to track down and install

I used a pushbutton shifter/trans in my 66 Cuda. Mounted the PB shifter in a console on the floor, between the bucket seats. If you can't find the parts, send me a PM. I have some pushbutton shifter parts, and might be able to have enough for a complete assy.
