I saw your question yesterday, figured someone else would respond. I don't see why not, the torque convertor slides on the transmission input shaft. Same story with a clutch. Just need a large prybar to move the crank back and forth (pry against a counteweight, not sure about against the flywheel--I'd think a service manual would indicate where it's appropriate).

thanks,, and I don't know where that post from yesterday went to, maybe someone did not like it as it was not slant specific,, but I really respect the answers that show on this forum,,

so the crankshaft end play checks good,, wonder why the seal would blow?

Probably got moved to "other".

There should be a pressure relief valve on the oil pump. If it sticks, it could let pressure climb very high--but I don't think that valve should be "relief-ing" at low engine speeds, much less idle, on a hot motor. Cold motor with thick oil, sure. Might want to hook up a good mechanical oil pressure gauge.

They said they checked the crankcase ventilation system; that is good, assuming it was checked properly. Other possible means of taking out a seal is a burr on the surface, which would chew up the seal; or an undersized surface. This seal wouldn't have been replaced recently for any other reason? I wonder if mis-installation might have occurred.

I forget where you said the seal was; but if it's close to the oil pump I guess it could be gunk or some other obstruction downstream. That should make the relief pressure valve open up; but if that is gunked shut also...

How bad is it leaking? I don't like to advocate driving a leaker; but if it's not that bad, and it's just to limp home...

Ok, I need to give in and get that book Dan is always raving about (time for some early Christmas shopping methinks). Anyhow, in your original thread (which is under "Social" btw), it says it's the oil pump seal. I can't remember if oil is pumped from the oil pump to the filter, or vice-versa--but I want to say it comes from pump to filter. If so, I wonder if you have a plugged up filter.
