I was wondering if anyone had a link to the external dimensions of the A500 AOD trans.

I currently am replacing the floor in my 65 valiant and would like to plan ahead for a future trans swap. I am aware of the various difficulties with the swap (adaptor plate, crank register, driveshaft, t-bar mount x-member enlargement, shift cable and kickdown, etc...) Basically I want to know if I just to need to enlarge the tunnel from where the tailshaft bolts on back. Are they the same diameter at the front of the tailshaft housing? How long is the od unit? I realize that it probaly better down all at once with the actual trans mounted up, but the rust repair is an entire floorboard and a small distance up the side of tunnel. There isn't any worrisome structural weakness and it is getting many braces and full subframe connectors.

I know it still might not fit, but at least it will be close enough that I would not have to redo too much of the interior of the car a second time.

Thanks in advance

Here is a link to dippy.org, take a look under 'Transmissions'.

That is a pretty good link, but I can't get the charts or pictures to load. Is just my computer or have they been removed?

I don't have measurements, but it is bigger around the case, pretty much all the way forward and back. The BH is the smallblock version, so that's one thing. In the middle section (just aft of the BH) it is pretty much like a 904. Starting 4-6" in front of the OD tail unit, it gets big. This is where most of the cutting needs to happen on the car. I completely removed the upper X on my '68 Dart and built a new one with a bottom edge about where the top of the old tunnel surface. I cut sideways far enough to relocate the inner bolt holes in the upper X on the car about 1" to the outside of where they were.

If I were to do it now, I would probably cut out the trans tunnel starting at the firewall and move it up 1.5", then reshape it around the new upper X to be at least 2" larger all around compared to the original floor. Maybe up to 6" behind the X would still need to be enlarged about 1". On my '68, I did not modify anything behind the new X, but the trans/driveshaft angle is not perfect (trans hangs low by 1-2").
