All the time people ask about how to id an engine (includning myself) so I got myself a "Chrysler Interchange Manual" and this is what is says about slant 6 engines (1960 to 1965 only).

Location of engine number:
1960-1962 - left side of block at the front and below cylinder head.
1963-1965 - right side, in front of block and below cylinder head.

Engine id, example id number P-22-8-3

First letter:
P - 1960 pass
TP - 1960 truck
R - 1961 pass
TR 1961-1962 truck
S - 1962 pass
T - 1963 pass
TT - 1963 truck
V - 1964 pass
VT - 1964 truck
A - 1965 pass

Note: An extra P represents a "premium engine"

first number:
17 - 170ci
22 - 225ci

second and third number is build date
8-3 = august 3

Maybe it can be handy information for some one.

So what is the very last number on my block....the "2" ??
Does that stand for "1962" ?

Oops, careful…you've run into an aftermarket book fail. Actually, in '60 the ID number is stamped near the back of the water pump scroll portion of the block, except if it's stamped in the '61-up location at the top of the right side of the block on an extended pad area of the block deck, facing the sky, below the frontmost spark plug (if the cylinder head's installed) outboard of the frontmost cylinder (if not). Also, that book's letter ID chart omits RA (1961 aluminum 225), SA (1962 aluminum 225) and TA (1963 aluminum 225). I haven't seen any Chrysler-printed source of information stating that an extra P indicates a premium engine; that would take some digging in the truck parts books to see how the 225-2 and 225-3 (heavy- and extra-heavy-duty engines) were designated in the early stampings. And while all of this is a pretty sound general guide, engine stampings did vary from plant to plant. Moreover, extra symbols were appended to indicate e.g. undersize rod or main bearings. And extra figures are sometimes found in addition to the date code. Sometimes these indicate a shift number, sometimes a production line number, sometimes they're internal tracking codes (as used for example to track a particular engine to check up on how the production line is functioning). blue62val's extra "2" probably fits into one of these categories.

actually, here's a picture of my "Australian" recognised engine number. It's the one we all go by here. I only noticed the one under the first spark plaug because I'm removing all the paint I've put on it over the last 25 years.

That's the one Chrysler Australia stamped into the engine to identify it as the engine that went into that particular car.
