As for the SL6 port arrangement, the main engineering reason I heard, for the released design, was to control heat and prevent the localized hot spot(s) you get when two exhaust valves / ports are side-to-side.
Other engines that have 2 adjacent exhaust valves / ports tend to have cracking problems in those area(s).
There were likely some business reasons also, such as patants and cost.

I used to get the Mopar magazines, but got tired of reading about hemis and reading about blatantly magazine sponsor biased articles. There was rarely any info about slant sixes in the publications (other than quips about how quickly you should replace them) and there was hardly any info about 904s. Most of the information is simply irrelevant to my interests, so I stopped getting them.

This site has more information, better tech help, and more interesting articles than any mopar magazine ever did.
