I got a set of lifters on ebay for $30 and loaned the tool from the auto parts store (for free). It's really simple to do and doesn't cost much money... And it made a huge difference.

20 mpg in a slant six truck is very good. All the above advice is good. Check your local emissions laws to see how much of the catalytic converter and air pump system can be removed or disabled. Maximum fuel economy would be achieved with the removal of the catalytic converter(s) and air injection system, disabling of the EGR system, bypassing of the OSAC valve, and giving the engine a good complete tuneup. Make sure the cold and heater air intake systems are intact and functional.

If you have a computer controlled ignition or carburetor (or both), your MPG will almost certainly increase by replacing the computer controlled systems with non-computerized systems. However, if your truck does not have any computer controlled systems (not likely, but possible in 1985) then leave the carb and ignition alone since 20 MPG is pretty good.

Synthetic oil helps, as does running the correct temperature thermostat. Your truck likely already has a clutch fan, but make sure it isn't seized up. Fill your tires to the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall to reduce rolling resistance.

Man I can't even get my truck to get more than 15...you're in good shape.

Well i just found the freeway mpg the other day, i still get ctappy intown mpg, and that is where i do most of my driving.

What is your in town mpg? If its anything over 12 mpg,that is not crappy for a truck.

If you get decent highway MPG but poor in-town MPG, I would consider changing the rear gear ratio to a lower physically/higher numerically gear ratio.

Let us know what carburetor and ignition system you have. Computer controlled or not? That will help us be able to give you better advice about how to improve the in-town fuel economy.

Ill get a picture up here in a day or two of my engine capartment, like i said befor i dont know much about cars, but i can learn how to do it, or ill have my friend help me out, who knows more about engines then i do.

The best thing you can do right now is to purchase a factory service manual for your truck. These come up fairly regularly on eBay for very low prices.

For example, here's one now. The factory service manual is far far superior to any Haynes or Chilton's manual. No other manual will give you the troubleshooting information for the lean burn system, and factory shop manuals give you correct information for your car, rather than generalizations about multiple years of vehicles.

In addition to the factory service manual, you should also consider getting one or all of of the books listed in THIS THREAD. I always get the factory service manual for every car I purchase and I have also gotten a copy of the Stockel book and it is excellent reading for anyone who wants to work on their car.
