i found someone down the street that has a 225 and 904 combo he want to sell....what is it worth? it was yanked from an old valiant...

Depends on the condition of the combination and how much the seller wants to get rid of the items. I have seen 225/904 combinations sell from anywhere between free to over $1,000. If everything is in good stock condition, I would say $100-$300 is a fair starting offer.

Please remember...
The crankshaft to torque converter "register" changed in 1968 so if the set-up you are looking at is 1967 and older, it is likely to have the smaller pilot hole in the back of the crank.
This is not an issue if you plan to use the engine with the trans that is currently with it but you will not be able to use the engine "as-is" on a 68 and newer 904. (large converter hub)

top of block ,under #1 plug,behind alt bracket....will have size ,year....scrape with staight blade screwdriver

Another quick way to determine the engine year, if the engine is still wearing its original paint, is the paint color of the engine.

Black: 1983-up, all applications, North American and probably other markets.
However, if the motor is red, you must determine if it is a 68 motor or not due to the crankshaft hub diameter difference.

the gentleman told me it is a 68 with a 904 tranny...he will take $300...so what does that mean?

is 68 a "good" engine????

thanks, i am really new to this, i have been reading through the boards here, but man, there is a lot of info...

i have 69 barracuda with original motor and drivetrain...so i thought i would build a fast (street only) motor and keep the original stock...

68 would be good. More common crank size, revised combustion chamber. Only thing that would make it better would be hardened seats in the head.

does the 68 have forged internals... i was considering putting a supercharger on it...

i thought that may be the fastest way to maintain drivability and still have power... i really don't want a big lopey cam...

it is my wife's car and an everyday driver....

what would you suggest to get a some kick...???

currently it has tall highway gears... (can't remember if it is 2.76 or 2.92) with 26" diameter tires on 15" magnum rims...

it doesn't need to be blazing, but it does need some more power....as well as better brakes and not drift so much at speeds...

i don't want to reinvent the wheel here and you all seem to have mucho experience in r&d on this...
