Quick question to throw out there..

The other day I was leaving the gas station after driving about a quarter mile from home, so it wasn't exactly running hot, and when I started forward from a light, it got up to maybe fifteen or so miles and hour and then stumbled hard for maybe ten or fifteen seconds. I thought about pulling over, but managed to power through it.
Since then, it stumbles maybe once every drive and doesn't seem to be related to anything but giving it gas from a low speed (maybe about 20mph). The only thing that was changed beforehand was the fuel mixture, which got a little leaner.
It hasn't flat out died yet. I changed the accelerator cam position yesterday, but that didn't affect it.
Does this sound like a failing accelerator pump?

When you were up to 15 mph were you 1/4,1/2 or full throttle? Might be accelerator pump. How old/what condition is your fuel pump? Does it ever cut out at a higher speed(50+mph)?

This time of the year there is a lot of water in the fuel.....especially the new fuel. Condensation in the gas tank doesn't help either especially if you don't keep the tank filled up.

I keep a bottle or two of gas dryer handy.

I have no idea how old it is. I've had the car five months and it did have a rebuild not too long ago on the carb, but the guy who did the PO's work left a lot of things in a questionable state, so who knows.
It does cut out just for a second if I'm at freeway speeds (it'll do 70 fine) and it seems to be right in the area of 65. Not enough to do anything but give me a moment of lag, then come back strong.

I'm probably in the area of 1/4 throttle, because it seems like it bogs when I really gun it from a stop. I know my timing MUST be off, because even without checking the degrees, you can hear it getting near perfect as you turn the distributor, but then you can't turn it any more. I don't seem to have the amount of travel I need in the distributor to reach the right timing.

I have done the fuel line mod, so everything from the fuel pump to the carb is in order. I'm next to positive my float's sunk. The fuel pump looks new enough from the outside. Most of my engine bay is filthy, but the pump's still pretty clean.
It heat soaks pretty bad too, but that usually just means we'll be sitting for a few to get the gas back in our veins after I've driven a while and restart it.

You need to make sure that your float is ok,and carb is in tune before you do anything else,but its sounds suspiciously like the diaphragm in the FP is going out.

Also the 1920 economizer body could be plugged up. See the carb section on Engine FAQ and print the manual. When you have the economizer body in your hand blow it out and make sure all the passages are free of debris.

When you take the bowl off catch all the gas in something so you can examine it. I use a cut down red plastic Folgers coffee container and slide it under the bowl. You might be amazed at what you find......sometimes small pieces of black rubber from old fuel lines that haven't been replaced yet with R7 hose, white oxidation particles from the aluminum oxidizing, red foam float particles from the float disintegrating, metal fragments, etc.....all which can clog up the economizer passages.

Before you take the carb bowl off look down the throat and pump the throttle linkage a few times to see if you have a healthy pump shot from the accelerator pump. If not, clean the accelerator pump output hole. You may have to replace the diaphragm when you pull the economizer body.

This work is very simple to do and should only take you about a 30 minutes. You don't have to pull the carb off the engine to do the work, but it helps if it's freezing out and blowing snow. Been there and done that......Once I got mine cleaned up I bought the very best fuel filter I could find. It has been spotless internally since.

Thanks Ted! I'll mess around with it and report back on my results.
Luckily, the carb can stay on, because "cold" here is about 60 degrees :)
