So, I pulled the distributor on my truck tonight to change the advance springs (still getting it dialed in) and during the 4 hour ordeal that followed of trying to get the darn thing retimed I noticed that my balancer has 3 timing marks on it. Yep 3 timing marks. Did this have something to do with leanburn?

And I still haven't gotten the darn thing timed right. I found one spot where it will run but it tries to die if you turn the distributor in either direction. I've done this a bunch of times but I've never ran into this problem before. Also my timing light says I'm off by 29 degrees. I've tried advancing/retarding it one tooth from the aforementioned spot but it refuses to run. Any ideas?

Find true TDC of cylinder 1 with a coat hanger or something else and reinstall the distributer? Just my idea. That should get you close hopefully.

Is it 180* out? I would do as Nongan says and find TDC and start over from there.

Most of them have 3 marks. This allows you to set TDC for each cylinder by turning the crank 120° to set each cylinder for initial valve adjustment. Two times around brings you back to number one. Being 29° out is another matter.
Verify TDC for number one, then check that the mark on the damper is correctly aligned with your timing indicator. One of the three marks should line up. Put some paint on it for future reference. It will line up for number one and number six.

Well I found TDC and it would start and run but the timing was WAY off. So I resorted to walking the distributor around one notch at a time. Eventually I found it, and the truck runs great now.

I too found 3 timing marks when i was setting my timing and did what Ceej said.I wondered what the other 2 were for.

If you have that type of damper, they will be 120° apart. (Equally spaced around the damper.)

Interesting. I have not seen a damper like that. I have only had about 5 slants, and all earlier than 70. Current engine is out of a 64-65. I forgot, my first slant was a 72. I do not know about the damper on that engine. I never got into the mechanics of it.
