I don't know whether you guys have heard but Pentastar Parts here in Oz have got straight cut gear drives for the Slant.

I know that most won't want to go near them and would rather stick to the dual row chains but its nice to have something different. I put one on my latest build.

Cheers!

Ps. I'm not from Pentastar so I wasn't trying to plug anything :D

With straight-cut gears, I bet it's a noisey lil' bugger.

G'day Guys,

It is a noisy bastard but I love the sound. I would never do it to a daily driver! It would drive you nuts!

Some people love them, some hate them but everyone that hears my car loves the sound of it...

When I get a chance, I will try to post some footage with sound...

Cheers,

Hi there again...

I know it has been a long time since my last post but that's mostly because I was living abroad (without the car) for the last 2 years...

I wanted to update people on the gear drive... I ended up having a number of issues with it. Firstly the main gear would creep forward and rub on the cover, secondly when positioned correctly it only sat on half the key on the shaft resulting in me shearing two keys. It also tended to spin off the c clips out of the retaining grooves... All in all it resulted in me doing a few hours on the side of the road... I persisted as the nostalgic "muscle car" sound suited my car(well aware it did very little for power).

Anyways... I have read and learnt a lot from this site so thought I should share this experience. I still think highly of Pentastar parts who supplied it however if you are looking to get one of these from them or hemiperformance ask some questions about the teething problems.

Ps.... Now on my second build of the slant, this time replacing the triple su carbies for triple webers... Will also be changing the cam and will look to either Erson for the 270 or call Oregon camshafts (both from info from this site). Desperately hoping for 250hp at the motor....

Cheers.

i was just wondering about whether or not they made a gear drive for the slant. now that i know the issues, i'll steer clear.

my vw has straight cuts, and is almost as quiet as stock, just barely a wine at idle if you really pay attention.

it pays to have a bitchen set of gears, then spend an hour knocking down the edges and lapping.

That's an unfortunate turn of events.. Thanks for the update though.. We end users need to be the testbed for some parts.
