I need to replace the tailpipe on a 70 valiant with stock exhaust to pass inspection.
I will eventually buy a whole system from Waldron's (pull and rust-abate the manifold, install good gaskets, etc.), but am hoping to do so later rather than sooner.

It still has the factory exhaust. Oddly, the only part that is rotted is the top of the bend over the axle (the highest part.)

I'd like to just replace that pipe and postpone doing the full system replacement until after other parts of the car are refreshed.
Rockauto, etc. do not list exhaust parts for this car.
Walker doesn't either.

Is there another car that Walker does make parts for that would use that exact stock tailpipe?

I've never used an exhaust shop. I've always managed to buy parts locally or online, and install myself.

I'd imagine bending up a tailpipe from scratch would cost almost as much as the Waldron full system, but have no experience in the matter.
All advice is welcome and appreciated.

Muffler shops bend many of their tail pipes. It's cheaper, inventory wise, to keep straight tubing in stock and bend the pipes when needed. They use a card for each model and year that shows where and how many degrees to make the bends. A newer shop may not have cards for the older cars so you may have to search out a shop that's been around. Only takes 3-4 minutes to bend one up.

Same as above, Accurate Exhaust has Slant exhaust, and check around for a local. If your pipe is complete they will use it as a pattern. Got one made up for my 63 Valiant, $80 installed but I replaced the muffler too.

It's better if you can find an independent shop that has been around for awhile. I've got a buddy who has had his own shop for over 25 years. He has all kinds of cards for old stuff, and truly enjoys working on them too.

That's what I'm going to do for my oversized 2.25" exhaust. Just take the old one down to a shop have them bend all the pipes to the old one And weld everything up myself to save even more money.

Rock Auto lists Walker #45408 as a tailpipe for this car. (within the last couple weeks. It was not there when I had first posed the question).

Does anybody know if that would be a correct oem replacement?

If so, what muffler would work (keeping the original exhaust pipe and hangers, and installing the above-referenced tailpipe)?

I have a factory kick over from a 74 dart, I would give it to you for the price of shipping if you want, its just the kickover and that's it

I'm first going to try to confirm that rockauto has the right part listed, and see if I can get an oem style muffler. (the rest of the original tailpipe is a bit questionable looking, upon closer inspection. )

The picture on the Rockauto "looks" right - as much as one can tell from a 2-d picture. I checked Walker's online catalog and they don't cover the Valiant (or a Dart of the same era as your car.)

Why don't you call walker's tech line and ask. Let us know b/c I need one too.

A word of caution; lately, many of the Walker parts I've gotten lately were not very good fits at all; they used always fit fine, but not anymore.

I'll just buy it, return it if it's wrong, and post what I find.

I finally got around to ordering that rockauto tailpipe, and it was no longer available.

i searched dart and duster for the same year.

They list walker #44168.

I had it shipped.

side by side with the new one, the bends are identical from the muffler outlet to 10" shy of the tip outlet.

Where the original pipe sweeps up and then down in a 3" radius flourish, the new pipe simply turns down, leaving the outlet in exactly the same place, with the cut at the same angle.

The original is 1-3/4" (I think). the new one is 1-7/8"

the original exhaust pipe is 1-7/8" as well.

I'm having trouble finding a 16" case oval muffler with offset inlet and 1-7/8" inlets and outlets.

I'm debating getting a 2" in & out muffler and bushing each end down with 2" pipe (which has a 1-7/8" i.d., I believe).

This is just a temporary exhaust system to last me until I pull/paint the motor, at which time I will do 'good gaskets' and install a well planned, purpose-built exhaust. (until then, I don't want to disturb any rusty hardware or tenuous exhaust seals--manifold appears to be sealed to head with well-dried vintage RTV copper)

I have installed a 15 inch oval muffler with 2 inch Input and Output.
Napa part number 18102. this was the closest size they had and i used
adapters for the input and output. 75 plymouth duster.
