teardown was too rusty/dirty to see anything well enough to make sense of it.

I never had front drums before.

One spring that came off doesn't resemble anything in new hardware kit. No idea where it goes.

In the future, it might behoove you to clean the item being rebuilt before disassembly and take a few pictures of the unit still assembled for reference. At least until you get a factory service manual.

I won't need it. I figured it all out.

Mystery spring was really just a broken spring.

(One side at a time was not an option as I had to evaluate what was salvageable before making the decision to temporarily restore 9" drums, or do disk swap first. As it turned out, I got by with new drums, hardware, self adjusters, lug studs, wheel seals and wheel cylinder kits and some shop time to press/swage/cut. Had I needed much more, I'd have abandoned the drums altogether.)
