So we are putting new cam bearings in and noticed that the rear bearing has only one hole but there is two oil holes in the block?
We threw away the old bearings so we are not sure if how this works with one hole in the bearing.
its a 1970 225 slant. that we are changing from solid to hydraulic

The rear cam journal on the hydraulic cam should be grooved. As long as the oil hole in the bearing lines up with the oil feed hole in the block, you should be good to go.

And here is your picture:

There should still be an inlet hole and outlet hole I would think. Figure out where the second hole needs to be and drill it.

What brand bearings are those? I was told that grooved bearings are no longer available.

i believe the freed hole is the one with the red arrow. But what about the other hole? does it not get any oil running to it?
<img src="http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad61/Travman185/DSCI0161.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And the camshaft i bought does not have a groove. its a comp cam and it says its a hydraulic cam. Will this cam still work?

its my first time rebuilding a engine and im a little confused with this

That is for a hydraulic motor, but mechanical lifter motors use the same oil passages. I believe Slantzilla is right and you will nee to drill (and chamfer) a second oil passage hole.

I took the liberty of editing your photo to label the landmarks:

It looks like you MUST drill another hole to either supply oil to the head or to accept oil from the pressurized gallery coming off the pump. When it comes to the rear cam bearing in a slant six, remember what the doormouse said, "feed your head."

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Since the bearing has the groove the cam won't need to have one. :D

That raises an interesting issue- would it adversely affect oil pressure if one were to use a stock hydraulic cam with the groove on the rear bearing journal and a fully grooved rear cam bearing? Or would it just promote healthy oil flow?

STOP
Check for the correct bearing locations.
First off the cam bearings should match the block, not the cam
Solid lifter bearings in a solid lifter block, even with a hydraulic cam.
The hydro bearings are not as wide as the solid lifter bearings to match the narrower housing in the block.

The REAR cam bearing for both solids and hydraulic lifter setups has two holes, a little less then 180 degrees apart, and no groove. The FRONT cam bearing has the groove and one oil hole. The two middle bearings have one hole and no groove.
The hydraulic cam should have a groove on the cam itself. Many solid cams now have the groove, also.[/b]

As far as I know there was never a grooved rear cam bearing. The groove was on the cam.
It is the front bearing that has the groove.

 Yes, that is the front bearing. Sorry if I wasn't clear, Charlie is right- the groove goes in the hydraulic cam rear bearing journal on the cam itself, not on the bearing.
