Will my 67 gt center console work with a 64 904? I don't want to lose my center console shifter! Is there a way without fabricating?

No. The earliest transmission compatible with that shifter is a 1966 transmission. You might be able to use a '65-only cable-type floor shifter in the '67 GT centre console. First you'd have to find such a shifter, then you'd have to see what kind of adaptation it would take to make it work with the '67 console.

The 65 Baracuda I owned had a cable shifter in the console. Doug might help you no this. Your other option is a 66 and up 904. Thanks Ron Parker :D

i just picked up a 904 from a 68 cuda with a Slant 6. Is there any " tricks" to swapping out the transmissions? I am not a mechanic but am capable if the job is straight forward. Thanks again!

'68 transmission will not work with '67 or earlier engine crankshaft; '68-up torque converter nose is too large for crankshaft counterbore. '67-down torque converter will not fit or work in '68-up transmission. If you want to run a '68-up transmission behind a '67-down engine, you will either have to have a special custom torque converter made up for you, or swap '67-down transmission parts (input shaft, etc.) into the '68-up trans.

I fear you fell through the cracks of an insufficiently-detailed set of responses to your question. It is probably due in part to an insufficiently-detailed explanation in your question of exactly what you are starting with. You were asking about a 1964 transmission and it's not clear to me how that entered the picture.

Here's the deal:

Through 1965, the transmission shifting was controlled by two cables: one for gear selection and one to apply and release the park lock. Through 1964, these two cables were operated by five buttons for gear selection and a slide lever for Park. In 1965, a conventional P-R-N-D-2-1 lever was used, but it still operated the two cables.

Starting in 1966, the transmission shifting was no longer via two cables. Instead, the lever-type shifter operated a single linkage consisting of rods, levers, and pivots.

For this reason, 1965 and earlier transmissions cannot be operated by 1966 and later shifters, and the other way round is also true.

Through 1967, the crankshaft counterbore inner diameter on the slant-6 engine was 1-1/8" diameter, and so was the torque converter nose outer diameter. Starting in 1968, the counterbore ID and torque converter nose OD were increased to 1-1/4".

For this reason, a 1968 or later torque converter cannot be mated to a 1967 or earlier crankshaft. The other way round (1967 or earlier torque converter with 1968 or later crankshaft) can be made to work by using a spacer ring between the early small-nose torque converter and the late large-bore crankshaft. However, there is no way to adapt the large late torque converter nose to fit in the small early crank counterbore.

At the same time, the splines on the back of the torque converter (and on the transmission input shaft) were changed.

For this reason, a small-nose 1967 or earlier torque converter cannot be installed on a 1968 or later transmission, nor the other way round.

So in your 1967 car, the only transmission that will fit in every respect without modification is a 1966-1967 transmission. It can't be earlier than 1966 because of the shifter mechanism change, and it can't be later than 1967 because of the torque converter nose change. Of course, the transmission must be correct for the type of engine you have. Slant-6, LA V8, or B/RB V8. Bellhousing patterns are different.

Options for installing a 1968 or later transmission behind a 1967 or earlier crankshaft are:

• Have a custom late-spline/small-nose torque converter built up, or

• Install a 1967-down input shaft and other front-end components in the 1968-up transmission, so that you can use the 1967-down small-nose torque converter, or

• Machine the 1967-down crankshaft counterbore to enlarge it to the larger 1968-up inside diameter.

I have been looking and trying to research what transmission would work. I heard a few reply's about 66 and up would work and after the second reply about 66 up working. I found a 68 close to home hours after i read abouthee 66 up working, and picked it up thinking it would be a clean swap. I am not putting blame but I am trying to figure it all out. It is hard when there is no one near you to show you about these old cars. Thanks for the quick reply's and I will keep trying to get her on the road but I guess it's going to have to wait.

Smokin Jays,

Please start over and describe as well as you can:

1) what car you have (body style, year...),
2) what engine year you have,
3) what shifter you want to use, and
4) what transmissions or parts you have access to.

This will help us answer your questions more easily.

Thanks,

Lou

I have a 67 dart GT with an original engine 225/904

I just bought a 68 904 for the slant.

I would like to use the 67 GT center console shifter.

so I have a broken 67 trans, a working 68 trans and would like to keep the shifter console.

Dan explained it in detail, but I am out of $$$ and would like to trade or find parts CHEAPLY to finish the project.

Thanks

John

OK, thanks for summarizing that. Best option would be to find or get a hybrid converter made, as Charlie said, with a small ('67-down) nose and big splines (68-up trans). Probably about $200-300 for a stock type converter? Or, find someone with a '66 or 67 trans and converter, all together.

Dan covered all of this, just reiterating.

Lou
