I recently installed a 64 225 in a 69 Valiant and had a local converter guy build a converter to fit the early small index crank to the later 904 ! he only charged me 90 $ to build the converter. Best way for me. Ron

You guys are awesome, it would have taken me forever to come to the best conclusion. I'm getting prices on the options you all offered, it looks like having the crank's pilot hole machined-out is a good option.
I'll let you know what happens

I would just get a new converter, edge made a converter for me awhile ago for a early crank snout and a late model 904. I sold it to charrlie maybe a year ago.

I've got an idea that may or may not be viable, has anyone had the torque converter snout machined down? Is there enough material there or is it hollow?

Crankshaft city said they could regrind my 69 crank for roughly 90$ (depending on condition)

Central city cylinder head says they can machine out my crank for roughly 125$-150$

And the kicker is superior torque converter says there is no change in the 727 auto trans torque converter between 66 and 69, and that my torque converter cannot be machined down

I'm going to count my splines and double check my diameters on the converter to crank matchup and talk to the guys at superior torque converter again

It's hollow. Won't work.

Find a shop that actually knows what they're talking about.

As far as I know, that is correct. He has a 727 trans/converter. The converter pilot did not change size between 67 and 68, like the 904 did.

I don't have direct evidence, but we know the crank counterbore got larger for '68, the part number for the A727RG torque converter isn't the same for '66 vs. '68, there's no difference called out for crankshafts with A727RG vs. A904 transmissions, and there's no spacer ring called out for use with A727RG in '68 or any other year. So…how would all those facts reconcile with the torque converter nose not changing diameter in '68?

Early 727's up to 66 used a 19 spline input ,67 on used a larger 24 spline . As far as I know all 727 converters used the larger pilot.

That is what I thought, just was not sure of the year for the spline change. 727 converters were not used on the slant six, prior to 1968 without using the Chrysler transmission adapter (that is in demand), That adapter also included a crank spacer/adapter.

Okeh, I'm certainly willing to be wrong on something I have no direct evidence of.

Soooo…then what's causing the won't-fit on this engine swap?

All 727 ATs have the "big pilot" and if I read things right, the user found a 66 SL6 replacement engine... to replace his 69 engine. (the 66 has the small crank pilot hole)
He would be OK if he had found a 68 and up Slant to swap-in.

I think he would have also been alright with the '66 engine if he had a slightly older van which used an adapter plate to mount an LA 727.

So he could get his crank machined...is it possible to make a small-pilot 727 converter?

I don't know on the 727 converter. He would need to check with a converter builder. We do know it can be done on a 904 converter.

So I've got the 24 spline converter, I went into the torque converter shop after getting all the numbers. They say that the 24 spline half of the converter isn't a good match to the small hub half of the converters. He held up the two halfs and they didn't seem to match.
Too bad I can't use a mag drill to just blast that hole larger where it sits in the engine......
I'll pull the bottom end off and have my 66 crank machined.
Thank you all for the help, you guys are pros
