I will go under the car one more time tomorrow and double check that I haven't left anything important loose! I worry about doing dumb stuff the older I get! I really think it is ready.

I was so excited/nervous about this day. Don't ask me why. But nothing exciting happened at the track. The wheels went round, the car drove well, stopped well and we made it home in one piece. I did leave my switch on all night last night, and found the top blown out of my Blaster coil and oil everywhere!. Washed everything up and went to Advance and picked up another coil, and all was well.

On my very first run I lined up beside someone who was obviously faster than me, so I didn't have to worry about being close to anyone. I did a one-legged burn out and pulled up to the line. From then on out it was all a blurr. I don't remember much other than the car spun bad and when I shifted gears it slipped very bad. I don't remember what RPM I shifted or anything. Wow I was excited.

About 2/3 the way through I left off the gas and hit it again and I felt the tranny grab hold. Just about that time I see some debris coming from the car in front of me. It looked like a piece of black plastic or something. It went from the right side to the left, then right, then clear to the left retaining wall in front of me. Of course I lifted and drove on by slowly. But it was not a piece of plastic, it was his knarled up driveshaft! Luckily no one was hurt. With that excitment and a slipping tranny I ran a great 18.34 @74. Really fast!!

So I went back to the truck and adjusted the kickdown cable a little and went out for round 2. Heating street tires is useless so I didn't this time. I went to the line and tried to take off easier and this time it ran better but was still slipping . I lifted a couple times to let the tranmission lock up and I never did shift out of second gear. But it ran a 15.8 @ 84. 60 foot time was 2.221.

I adjusted the kickdown just a bit more and ran a 3rd time. This time I blipped the tires about 3 times and hit it pretty hard off the line. Now that I am calm I watched the tach and shifted at 5500 RPM. When it shifted into second was when I realized that I was still spinning. So I left off again and run through but it was an equally poor 17.9 @ 83

The good news was the engine sounds good. The car runs straight and brakes well. I did have a pretty bad oil leak, but that happens when you leave all the valve cover bolts loose after you adjust the valves. All in all I am happy with it, and it should run well into the 14's with traction and transmission work.

Since the long term prognosis for the automatic in my car is not good. (I will have a 4-speed) I did not rebuild the automatic that is in the car. I changed the filter and fluid and adjusted the bands while I had the pan off, that is all. So I guess I need to know what to do next. I think I would like to leave the automatic in it for now, but I don't want to dump a bunch of money into it because I would rather have the 4-speed.

So "auto" experts, help me out here on my next move. Before I tear it out to have it repaired, walk me through what to do. Kick-down is Lokar and is adjusted so that there is still a slight 1/8" of movement left at the kickdown arm when the throttle is fully depressed. The fluid is Dexron III.

Thanks for all your help.

Rick

Rick, if that's a stock Slant 904 you're pretty much wasting your time anyway. A decent motor like yours will have no mercy on those little clutches.

Pull the pan and look for debris. If there is clutch flakes in there it's toast. If not, tighten the bands up a little and try it again.

By the MPH you're making some pretty good steam. :D :D :D

Glad Greg didn't wipe you out.

Right now it has a 3.91 in it Mark. I didn't have time to install the spool but will soon. The torque convertor is a 3000-3200 stall I got from Lou so it should be good to go. Just have to decide what to do with the rest of the tranny.
