Pay attention to the oil pan shape.

The A904, like the A727 (used in v8 applications, and on some HD slant six vehicles), is a very tough, very reliable transmission. Treat it well and it should last a long time.

As long as everything was original to the car, the data tag on the driver's side fender will have a "D" code like D31 that will say the car was optioned that way, physical inspection of the pan shape is the only way
to be completely sure though.

This web page should give your info (trans ID # stamped on vertical side of pan rail)

The odds are overwhelming that you have an A904 automatic. There is an almost-nonexistent slim chance you have an A727. Check the fender tag, which is on the driver side inner fender. It's a 2" x 3" sheetmetal tag stamped with a bunch of letters and numbers. If you post a clear, sharp photo of it, or an accurate transcript of its contents, we can tell you quite a bit about your vehicle's build and equipment.

Is something wrong with your transmission?
