At your HP (or most important) torque level, you need to make a choice. lighten up/roller your 727, put it back in, and forget about it for countless runs,or go with a pro-built 904 that might hold up,but need constant maintainance to keep it sharp.

A 904 will live. Just make sure it has added clutches....etc Quality components are the key. Rollerized(torrington bearing) transmissions are not cheap. They can pick up 1-2 tenths.

How does a 2 speed ever work better than a 3 speed? It seems as though you would have to be out of your peak torque and horsepower curve more with only 2 gears. I'm sure I am missing somethng but in my thinking 4 gears would be better than 2.

Rick, I think with a bigger engine it works out by having less rotating mass - Only 2 forward gears and one less shift - less down time while shifting in the 1/4 Mile.

Alot of GM and Ford and some Big Chrysler V8 Dudes use the Glide.

Just watch Pass time and see how many folks use 'em.

I think the biggest draw is the parasitic drag loses and one less shift like Greg said. I think all race cars have 3 pedals in them, at least mine always have :P .

You also have to consider that a lot of the people with Glides have them because of the "monkey see-monkey do" syndrome.

Walk around the pits sometime and see how many guys running Glides have 1 or 2 spares with them.

The one clear performance advantage to a Glide is on a .400 Pro tree. A Glide will release a little quicker.

On a .500 tree you'll never notice the difference.

I'm assuming that turbo cars with the broad torque band would respond better to a glide than peaky high revving motors. Sometimes I'll get excited and forget to put the car in first and leave in second. It still runs within a tenth or so. Maybe this is why the pump went out... It looks like a 904 will be the replacement but not the rollerized one.

Looking, but if I can't find one at a reasonable price I will just do it myself. You have someone in mind?

I did, he want $1850 for one that was borderline. He said 500-600 hp. Another $1200-1400 for the best plus converter.

Tristan has a roller A904 in his Duster.

With a turbo, unless it hits right at the line, the glide probably wouldn't be the right choice.

At the high end of the engine rpm envelope, the glide, properly set up takes around 12-18 hp to run depending on the setup. This compared to 35-40 for the A904.

For a blown car, the glide can be the right choice. Built correctly, a glide will hold anything a slant six can throw at it. Many of the trick "Race" parts are actually weaker than the oem glide parts. Some of the hemi nitro guys I've been talking to have glides that live fairly long lives. Got to consider what power they are throwing at them of course.

For a car under 2000# with forced induction there could be a payback. For a door slammer slant six car, probably not going to get good results.

just another thought Dale Rose run his car with a supercharger on it i would say over 500 hp . All us ga boys get our transmisions built by the same person. Me Dale Rose Ron Hamby Norman Foster and others have the same tourque converter . none has failed . I would think it would be cheeper than what you posted for a tourque convertor

What you are seeing is weight transfer. Who built the trans has nothing to do with it. :?
yea like 3100lbs w/driver moving 10.16 seconds in the 1/4 @ 129mph
it's a 904
