i got a timing light and a tach/dwell meter so i can adjust my carb and timing. i found the Tab on the drivers side of the engine with the timing marks and also the small lines on the bottom pulley and marked it with white chalk.

I plugged the hose from the distributor with a screw and hooked up the light and started the engine to adjust the timing. But i could not see the marks in there anywhere so I proceed to pull the front plug and roughly find top dead center with a coat hanger.

When I found ( as close as I could) top dead center the marks on the pulley were on the opposite side of the tab ( on the pass side )on the engine. So i brought it back around ( as close as i could) where the piston was in the down position and the marls on pulley lined up with the tab on drivers side of engine

I have done some searching but cant seem to find much info on what would cause this..

Thanks in advance

Which end of the hose did you plug? You'd need to plug the distributor end (and make sure the hose has no leaks).

Keep turning. You got the wrong TDC the first time -- the one between the exhaust and intake strokes. You need the other TDC, the one between the compression and power strokes.

yes it was the end connected to the distributor and there is no leaks

and i did turn and turn it but it seemed like every time it came up the darn marks on the pulley were facing the wrong side of the car.. When the car is running it seems to run very good and i shine the light in on the pass side of the car and the marks are right there in the right area just on the other side from the tab

Clip your timing light pickup onto #6.

Will that change the fact that when the engine is running the marks on the pulley are on the over side from the tab on the engine. I don't claim to be an expert on timing but it don't make any sense that the marks on the pulley are on the complete other side when the car is running smooth.

Is it possible he has an early engine with a late timing cover or some other mismatch of parts?

Where is any numbers on the engine that will identify what year the engine is. And if it is a 1970 225 is the timing tab supposed to be on the drivers side of the engine and if so then i guess it would be a pulley issue

For some reason I was thinking when timed off of #6 the timing marks would be located in a different spot. Big brain fart... It ain’t so… They are the same as when using #1.

Just for the heck of it try attaching pickup on numbers 2 & 3 and see where the marks show up.

Sounds like you have the bolt on timing tab timing chain cover. You need the cover with timing tab spot welded on it or change the damper to the older style.

i have more research to do but i believe it might be a pulley/balancer issue because changing positions on the distributor and all this other stuff dont seem change the fact that the marks are showing up on the other side of the cover from the timing tab

I could be wrong and have to look at it again but the marls seem to be on the pulley with the( in the back) second belt

The marks would be, and the reasoning is; you can remove the front pulley and bolt it back on in 3 different positions.

There are 3 different styles of the "tabs" that you reference when setting/checking timing.

Early Type:

BOLTED to the timing cover.

Late Type:

WELDED to the timing cover.

Really late Type:

Same position as WELDED, but it has a cylindrical looking part to it, instead of the tab.

The difference between the first two styles is a different position on the front of the engine. You would need to have the matching damper for that style. It sounds like yours is mis-matched.

You will see a lip of metal sticking out from under the head the length of the block. There should be an Alphanumeric stamping on the top of the engine block behind the alternator, under the number 1 and 2 spark plugs.

Clean the area with a scrub brush if required, and let us know what all of those characters are so we can properly identify your engine.

Could you take a picture of it and post it up here?

70 225 will have the timing tab on the passenger side of the front cover. If yours is on the driver's side you have the wrong cover and probably the wrong damper for that cover.

this is blurry but its the pulley with the groove in it and i white chalked it.. it is facing the passenger side of the car exact opposite the timing tab and that's about where it is when i put it at TDC and its running smooth with the light on it

Image

here are pics of the timing tab
