 Post subject: a new 2 barrel carb

I have been having a lot of problems finding a good carb for my slant 6.
I have tried enough used 1 barrel, 2 barrel, and 4 barrel carbs to make my wife mad at me for having so many used carbs around. I have rebuild them my self, I have had carb shops rebuild them for me (I still have not found a good shop). They work great for a few days and then they slowly go out of adjustment and wont work right anymore.

I have decided to buy a new or a remanufactured carb.

I was wondering if some one could recommend a few ( not too expensive) and were to get them. I have both the 2 barrel and 1 barrel intakes.

I am looking for some performance, but in this economy, mpg is always a must. I am willing to sacrifice some mpg's for performance but not much.

Most of my driving are short trips. (10-15 min twice a day on a cold engine) I usually go pretty fast because I have to beat traffic. About once a month we go on a road trip to the desert and this involves about 1 hour of highway and one hour of dirt road (wash-board dirt road). I do not want to lose the "truck" factor. I want to be able to use it as a work truck once in a while.

I have a 1982 d150 w/ HEI and double headers.

"Remanufactured" carbs are a very bad gamble. Usually they don't work well.

Need more info on the emission system of your truck to point you at an optimal pick.

But really, if you're having this much constant trouble with multiple different kinds of carburetors, it suggests the problem is elsewhere.

The truck has been stripped of all emission systems. It has the carb, intake, exhaust, and that is about it. (except for the vaccume advance and the hose that goes from the valve cover to the carb).

It will run fine untill I take it on that bumpy dirt road. That is when it all goes south. I have been learning alot about used carbs and the ones I have are in pretty bad shape. (need bushings, missing choke pieces).

Last carb I had on it was a Q-Jet, and it ran fine. Problem was the gas economy on city driving.

I have this truck in Mexico, and the mechanics there do not do a good job of fixing or repairing carbs. I have tried 4 mechanics on both sides of the boarder and so far I have done a better job Putting the carbs together and making them run good then they do. Even shops that call them selves "carb shops" do not really know what they are doing for the most part.

All the shops I have found do not really repair the carbs. They just change any gasquets or pieces that show wear. Hell, I can do that!!



If I go three months with out taking my truck on that bumpy dirt road, my carbs will go three months with pretty much no problems.

That is why I believe I need a new carb.

But again, I'd like to hear other people's opinions.

I agree, I cant figure why a bumpy road would cause carb problems, unless they are just loosening on the manifold causing a vacuum leak. But they shouldnt do that either.

Are you running a GOOD air cleaner AND filter? Thats the only clue I would have for all the carb issues you are stating that you are having.

New air filter most of the time. ( I need to change the existing one) I am not familiar with a air cleaner. Maybe I need one!

I am narrowing it to bad floats. And bad assembly. I have had to tighten bolts on the carb and on the intake in the past.

Like I said, mechanics are getting very lazy, all the good ones have retired.

Now a days you mostly find "part changers"

I think you've got trash in the gas tank and inadequate fuel filtration.

Yep, what Dan just said! Bumpy road + old gas tank = carb bowl full of silt-like substance that came from the tank and went right past your filter.

Symptoms: Barely idles, or, idles until you put it in gear, then stalls. Only way to drive it is to rev it high before engaging the rest of the drivetrain.

You are right. those are the symptoms exactly!!
I will have the tank cleaned, install new fuel lines and provide good filtration.

I have decided to buy a carb anyways, could you please recommend one. and were to buy from?

My original question was if someone could recomment a carb and were to buy it.
Now that I think we found my problem, I still am in the market for a carb.

Well I would suggest a good quality 2bbl carb if mileage is a factor. But would be willing to bet if you have as many carbs as you say, you could probably clean one up yourself and kit it after the tank/lines and filter replace/clean....

thanks for all the help guys.. sorry for the late update.. I found the problem.. was not a carb problem at all. It was the rubber gasket on the power brake booster, were the hose connects.. the bumpy road would cause it to move around enough to were it sucked air.. easy fix..
