I've had an old Kraco AM/FM Cassette in the '63 for just about forever. Figured it was time to leave the 80's behind and catch up to the 90's and install a CD player. Installed a nice remote control JVC. Drove it once and everything was fine. Next time I went to use it, it powered up and went out. It was dead. I knew I wired it correctly since it was so simple, no other devices, amps, eqs, etc. Just the stereo and two speakers. But I double and triple checked it then pulled the unit and bench tested it. It's dead. The only thing I can think of it that I have the original charging system so maybe the newer sensitive electronics couldn't handle the bump-bump charge the crappy old regulator puts out.
Does that make sense? Is there a 12v surge protector that I can use to prevent this from happening to the next stereo? Or am I on the right track to begin with?

I think you're probably right about what killed the radio. There's a great deal of upgrading to be done to your charging system…!

Thanks Dan. Only the charging system is one thing that I hadn't planned on doing anything to, it may be old and sloppy, but it does the job. Do you know if there are 12v surge protectors available and if so would that do the trick?

Ed, yes, I still had power. And remember I bench tested it afterward so it is not the car and the deck is dead.

There is often a fuse inside an aftermarket radio in addition to any that maybe in installed in the car’s circuit feeding the radio.

You may want to conduct a few voltage tests to see if your car is over charging.

Check the fuse on the head unit.

A BIG capacitor on the power lead should do it.

A solid-state regulator would help too.
