From a strictly racing standpoint, am I better off with a 180 degree thermostat or a 195? I have a 195 in the car and was thinking about installing the 180. I do have a 160 too.

I chased down another vacuum leak at the back of the carb. That was causing my part throttle "lean" issue. I did run it down the road again and all seems well. I would sure like to have a set of the Mickey Thompson ET Streets for 2 weeks, but I have to wait and see what all my medical bills cost from my back!!! Back is doing well!

And as a side note, Ryan's Dart puked the clutch yesterday. It sounds like the center hub broke out of the disc. Not so bad since it was installed in 2002. It has suffered some serious abuse!! It comes apart Monday evening.

Rick

Most race cars don't use thermostats, they either use the restrictor washer or nothing at all. Between rounds you can't cool the car by pouring water back thru the top radiator hose with a thermostat in place. If you plan on driving the car to the race track, that would be a different matter.

Ok, assume I will have a thermostat. I have 160 / 180 / 195. In 2 weeks the car will be towed to the track. Is there any performance advantage to dropping down from the 195 that is in the car now.

Doesn't the restrictor slow down the water so that the engine can get some heat into it? Smaller restrictor, more engine temp?

Thanks,

Rick

I have been told the job of the restrictor is to slow the coolant movement to allow time to cool in the radiator before going back into the engine.
I run a 5/8 restrictor for race only.I've tried different starting line temps in the Dart and get the best times when the temp is at 190 when staging,(Just saying this is what worked for me)I can control the temp with the electric water pump. If you are going to run the car on the street use a thermostat.Experience has shown me that Slants like heat,so you may find that the car runs better with a 180 over a 160.I played with different stats and the 63 Valiant likes the 195.Results vary so your car may like a different heat.(Kinda why cars are known as "She" or "The Old Gal").....

I've always been under the impression that a restrictor slowed the water down through the motor so it will pick up heat. With no restrictor the water circulates so fast that although the gauge shows cooler, the motor is actually hotter.

Its really a tough question to answer Rick. Most all engines have their own likes and dislikes even with engines with similar components. Its likely going to be a trial and error thing, but I personally like to be at 180° when I leave the line, but more importantly, how hot is it at the end of the pass. Engines that don't make a lot of HP don't usually have much increase in temp going down the track as one that is using a power adder or just high compression with a good amount of HP. I would start at 180° and go from there.

I would run 180 if cooling system in good shape. I have always found that to make a Slant engine the coolest, use no restrictor and no stat. Many experiments to back this up. That said, I almost always run a 180 or 195 stat now.

Cooling system is good. Plus I have manual on and manual off of my electric fan set-up so I can cool things down and then shut everything off just at the line if I want to.

I think I will just install the 180 and call it a day.

Rick

Rick, this made it's way to my shop via Wookie. Thank you very much! It's proudly displayed on the main shop wall.
