Can you swap a long shaft iron housing tailshaft for a shorter aluminum housing and shaft?

Thanks

What I mean is do you have to swap the output shaft and essentially tear down the insides to the dogs and replace those gears on a shorter shaft when you swap long for short tail shafts?

Probably have to swap the whole enchilada internally. The main shaft and output shaft in most stick trannies are one in the same and run the whole length of the trans from right behind the input shaft to the rear yoke. So if the tailshaft is shorter, so is the main shaft, and all the gears, bearings, sliders, syncros,etc...will have to come off to swap shafts. Plus, theres no guarantee some of those components interchange between trannies either, the mainshafts could have different size journals requiring specific hubs and bearings for those shafts only. You would just have to tear into them and see if these parts swap freely between them.

After about 3 hours of reading through the old forum it is possible, pretty much as you describe plus additional luck, as the tailshaft diameter may change. Damn. Someone said they put the long shaft side shift into an A body, someone else said a duster, yet another said no to a 66 barracuda but yes to a duster. I'm after a duster. 76 feather duster modified with older lighter bumpers & such.

Have you ever considered doing a T5 trans swap. Their lightweight and a 5 speed to boot with an OD 5th gear. Might prove to be more beneficial for your project.

The simple answer is "yes"... But...
Main shafts are different between the overdrive and 1 to 1 transmissions so a long OD mainshaft and tail housing can only be swapped with another OD transmission. (short versions)

The gearbox has to be completly disassembled to do the mainshaft swap.

If you had the A-body shift rods, and could fabricate a simple bracket to locate the shifter where needed, and take ~4" off the driveshaft. I don't see why you couldn't mount a long-tail 833 under an A-body.

Member RonnieB833 appears to be running one in his Demon clone, so you might want to check with him.
