California state law says any child seat must be secured with a lap and shoulder strap. Unfortunatly that was not an option on my 66 wagon. Now i must bite the bullit and replace these brand new lap belts the previous owner installed.

On the contrary, can i weld a seat belt support behind the rear bench and just run a new belt to connect to the existing belt via 3 point adapter?

There might be a loophole or grandfather clause in the law for lapbelts only...........

I know they prefer child seats in the rear, and older cars (not as old as ours) often only had lap belts in the rear.........

REALLY!!!, are they serious?? :
"Your grandson must be restrained in a rear-facing restraint. A rear-facing infant must never be placed in front of an airbag. However, just pick-up trucks have an air bag on/off switch. If your truck has the switch, turn off the air bag and move the vehicle seat as far back as possible. If you cannot switch off the airbag, use a different vehicle when transporting your grandson."

Well, I have a 86 pickup truck with 3 point belts (no rear seats)

and a

64 Valiant with all lap belts (had to add the rears)



Good thing I don't have any kids.........................

Do whatever you feel is safest. For me, I would put in the 2nd belt anchor with strong welds and a bolt. That will be safer for your kid than a lap belt by itself, and in the event one of the belts fails (not likely, but you just never know), you have the secondary belt which will hold the seat in position.

A bit of a belated reply, but I put lap sash belts (lap only in the middle) in my 69 wagon, which had none at all in the back. However, as the car was getting painted, I cut a hole through the pillar, welded in a support bracket inside the pillar and then welded a new section over the outside and you would never know.

After re-reading the law, it states that lap belts are fine for infant and child seats. Its not until the child needs a booster seat that I need a shoulder strap. That buys me a few years on THAT project...

Thinking about it, that makes perfect sense, as I remember now that we used to have metal clips that effectively turned the lap/sash belt into a lap belt by holding the 2 pieces together, as there is only one hole through the child seats anyway, plus the strap to the restraint anchor point.
