What is the best way to repair a worn out drain plug in my oil pan? The guy at the jiffy lube said to buy a bigger bolt and cram 'er in there.

I'm thinking of having a new hole made by a pro, any idea what that would cost?

Stop going to Jiffy-Lube (etc.) because it means getting a poor-quality oil filter and running the high risk of your car being damaged because the idiots there either leave the drain plug loose or overtorque it, stripping the threads, which is probably what happened in this case.

Oversize, thread-cutting oil drain plugs are available in the Dorman, Oil-Tite, and HELP! product lines.

If only the plug itself is worn then just get a new standard size plug. If the pan is damaged then you'll need to get the oversized one Dan recommends. I'm surprised Jiffy Lube didn't have a drain plug for you. I work at a Jiffy Lube about 22 years ago and replaced plenty of drain plugs. Older Fords seemed to have soft ones and you could see the threads getting worn thin so I chucked a lot of those before they damaged the oil pan.

At long last, I finally got my hands on a jack and some stands! Now i can finally take care of this oil leak issue.

What size bolt bolt am i looking for?

1/2"-20. Make sure the oil pan itself is damaged before you use the oversize plug. You might be fine with a new standard size plug.

I recently drilled one out that an oversize plug had stripped out. I took it out to 5/8"X18.

Avoid doing this if you can, it was not the most fun thing I have ever done.

If your old one is just worn out and not needing a oversized one. Why not go to a parts Dept. at a dealer and get the correct one instead of some aftermarket crap??

That because YOU gave a crap... It amazes me sometimes to watch some of the auto "techs" that work @ some of these places now days...(ie:Jiffy, Wally Service Dept etc)

i've had this problem. i picked one up at autozone and have had luck with it. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... ing=search don't put a bigger bolt in there yet until you're sure it necessary. i suggest buying both bolts, trying the standard one first, and returning whichever one you don't use. it's only a couple of bucks.


stop going to jiffy lube, my friend worked there and i use to go over and hang out with them. what a waste of tools.

The correct sized one is 90% working, i'll probably still end up putting the oversize in there eventually.
