I have a 63 Polara with a 225 (3.7) I seen a youtube video
boasting 40 mpg and have been arguing with my brother -in- law.
Can someone send me a link to this please

Being as you live in California, this feat could be duplicated. Drive to Frazer Park, top off your Polara, then coast to Bakersfield. Might manage 40 MPG on that trip.
Other than that. Well, just not going to happen. Enjoy your car, have fun with the /6, but they are what they are.

If you do a lot of interstate driving, drafting big rigs can help also. Last week, our local newspaper had an article about a 2011 VW TDI setting a new world record for MPG's. It got 84.1 MPG on a trip from Fla.-Texas-Virginia. It went 1560'ish miles on just one tank of gas(diesel). They said that they drove consistently about 5 miles and hour under the speed limit and kept it in 6 gear as much as possible. Driving habits are going to be how you get the best mileage on anything.

Yeah, and you won't care about mileage once you're dead in a traffic crash you caused by drafting a big rig.

Huh? That's a very safe place to drive. They don't stop fast and the draft extends quite a ways back of the trailer.

Doesn't the draft not even come into play until about 70mph or so?

As far as a Polara getting 40mpg...highly unlikely. Unless you're willing to spend $35-50k on insane modifications, I don't see it happening or anyone even willing to attempt it. Especially in a Polara.

Never had anyone try to hypermile behind me. Tailgaters on 4 lanes get me slowing down to where they will want to pass.

I had a guy tailgating me in a construction zone years ago. Dirt and gravel no asphalt. I yanked the trailer brake and he got all kinds of gravel flying at him.................

Like hantayo said, you stay back a bit to get out of the real turbulent air. Mythbusters also did a special on drafting big trucks and showed a huge increase in MPG just by being back 30 feet or so.

Maybe.....but that 30 feet will disappear before you can even tickle your brake pedal, should that truck have to lock'em up. Kinda hard to enjoy your hyper-mileage from a hospital bed or casket.

I drive oversize loads in the oilfield and constantly battle tailgaters. In the state of Texas you can be fined for this offense, if you're lucky. If not you can eat a big chunk of DOT bumper. This is tantamount to playing Russian roulette with a semi auto pistol! :tsk:

Agree with all. Those trucks can stop faster than you think. To the OP, I had a '72 Satellite with a 225, and could get 22-24mpg on the freeway at 65mph. Its about the same weight as your Polara. This is with electronic ignition, clutch fan, 2 1/4" exhaust pipe to a Magnaflow muffler and a 2" tail pipe and carefull tuning of the 1920 Holley carburetor.

Not! Go read up on the carnage caused by this foolhardy practice you advocate.

Not to mention when a recap on a trailer tires goes....I was next to a semi when that happened once. Sounded like a 12 guage going off, and the person behind got their right headlight taken out and a nice black mark (from what I could see) on the car (I think a Camry or something). Not a safe place. I avoid semi's around here where most of the posted speed limits are 70+ mph.

Plus, I have heard that many of the semis on the road in Texas come from Mexico where safety standards and inspections are somewhat more relaxed than in the States.
